40 cal S&W for concealed carry
Looking to buy a 40 S&W cal. for my cc gun. Not looking for sub compact. I am looking for a well built pistol that will function with reloads and left hand friendly. Any suggestions? As of now, I am looking at the FNH and the Ruger SR40. These two pistols are as big as I want to go in size and a little smaller might be worth looking at! Maybe the Sig 239! Any suggestions?

Maybe a mid size Springfield XD would do.
Also you might look at the offerings of CZ and Glock |

M&P 40 compact is what I would do.

4" XD40 is a great piece. Might be a little bulky to carry but you said you didn't want subcompact

My friend has a P239 in .40 and it's a little snappy (I have the .357 sig model and I find it a little less so). Depending on your budget, the EMP in .40 is very nice (once you break it in, it should handle reloads).
Otherwise, M&P 40c isn't bad; haven't tried the Rugers so can't really say for them... |

What about the Ruger SR40c? Little more compact than the SR40,15+1, 3.5" barrel, Accurate.

40 cal S&W for concealed carry
I favor the Glock 19/23 frame. Among the smaller options, I prefer the SR9/40 or M&P 9/40 compact models. I like that I can get all of my fingers on them, and they conceal effortlessly for me.

Another vote for the M&P compact in .40. Love mine, accurate, reliable,
and nice carry size. Comfortable packing in my Kholster IWB holster, well concealed. One to consider in my opinion. Last edited by ShootingNut; February 5, 2014 at 08:00 PM. |

Left handers are all right!....
There are a few top selections for a ambi-left hand type semi-auto .40 pistol.
I'm left handed too & work on EP/security jobs so I look for high quality, ambi style sidearms. Good selections IMO include: Beretta PX4 Compact or the PX4 C(constant) .40, the SIG-Sauer P229R, P239 DAK(with night sights), HK P2000 or P2000sk(with night sights, LEM), S&W SD40(with Trijicon HD sights), FNS .40, Walther PPX in .40S&W(very rare ), Ruger SR40 or SR40 compact. Use only factory made high quality rounds for defense-duty. No reloads or hand-loads. Top .40 carry rounds include: Hornady Critical Duty 175gr, TAP, DPX, PowRball, Speer Gold Dot 165gr JHP, Remington Golden Saber 165gr JHP, Ranger T/T Series .40S&W. Glock 22 or 23.
I think the M&P improves on the Glock design. Take a look at HK. You may want to google around to see which designs have the least felt recoil. However, look at the the Springfield Armory EMP in 40 S&W if you like 1911s. |

Since you like the SR40, might want to check out the 40c. Very reliable and accurate guns.

KBP, have you carried a full size or even compact pistol before?

I would vote for the Glock 23 Gen 4. That way you can move the mag release to the proper side for shooting left handed.

I would stay away from Hi-Point for conceal and carry. They are much too bulky and heavy.

I came across the Bersa Thunder Ultra Carry Pro that is ambidextrous....I am leaning toward 9mm and they make it in a .40 too.
http://www.bersa.com/bersa-firearms/...ro-series.html I am continuing to research on something similar to what you are asking, but have already purchased a FNX 40 which might be a little bigger than you want. Last edited by dontcatchmany; April 22, 2013 at 05:00 AM. |

I carry the FNX 40 with me. I compared it to the Ruger SR40 and for me, I'm more comfortable and better with the FNX. The Ruger is an awesome choice though. My personal preference I like being able to carry locked and cocked like a 1911.

40 cal S&W for concealed carry
90% of the time I CCW -IWB. After carrying the small 380's I just can't get used to the larger frame pistols. I got a PT145 specifically to CC but even though its one of the smallest 45's I keep grabbing the Sig238 or TCP738. You kind of forget they're there. Especially with summer coming I don't know how you guys carry the larger frame pistols for CCW.

Go big or go home...
You should carry the largest caliber in the smallest format you feel necessary.
As tactics instructor & USMC combat veteran Clint Smith says: "handguns are comforting not comfortable" . Many gun owners & armed citizens say: "use enough gun". A .25acp or .380acp is not as good in armed defense as a .40S&W, .357sig, .45acp or 9x19mm/9mm Luger. CF |
