Read recently about a new shotgun
for the DOD with regards to the joint service combat shotgun. It's a new Benelli called the M4 Super 90. 18 1/2" bbl w/ chokes, pistol grip stock w/ a telescoping bttstock and a Piccatinny rail on the reciever as well as ghost ring sights. Sounds intriging... |

Yes, it beat out the Saiga 12, the SPAS-15, and unspecified models from Winchester and Mossberg. Reportedly, the Kalashnikov-pattern Saiga came in second, but wouldn't that have been a kick in the shorts if it had won?
If anyone wants to translate Italian, there is a link I can give you: http://www.mondadori.com/panorama/ar...rea_1_2053.htm |

There is a short write-up on this in the newest SAR also. Another interesting detail (no photo, too bad) is "an integral five-round speedloading device (not seen) beneath the receiver. With the buttstock telescoped, minimum length is 34.9", and empty weight is 8.44 pounds. Metal surfaces are protected by a non-reflective milspec finish. Claimed endurance is 25,000 rounds of standard velocity 2.75" ammunition with no parts replacement. The stated accuracy is six or more 00 buckshot pellets from every round on a military E-type silhouette target at 40 meters."
Five of the weapons will be used at Aberdeen and ten more will go to the Marine shotgun school for user testing. |

Thanks. Skorzeny |

I thought that the SAiga was only available in 12 gauge and .410 right now.
Glad to bear about the Benelli... It is about time that the Modern Semi's came into their own and stopped living with the wrap of the older less reliable semi's. Doing so is like saying that the M-4 Sucks, just because the original M-16 A1's were plagued with problems. |

According to Benelli, the M4 is sceduled to begin delivery to the military early 2000 and may be available to law enforcement towards the end of 2000.

Specifically, the US Marines will begin receiving the delivery starting the first quarter of 2000.
LEOs "may" get be able to get them during the third and fourth quarters. The factory rep did not say anything about other branches of the armed forces or non-LEO civilians.
