Need advice on Tactical shotgun.

My local dealer just got a shipment of police trade-in Mossberg 590A1 9 shot special purpose shotguns. Most at any where from 5-7 years old, and show normal wear on barrel, and receiver. The one I had a chance to handle still locked up solid, and was in the best of shape of all of them. They are selling them at $299.99

I also know of another dealer who has a Benelli Super Nova Pump Tactical model that is pretty much NIB, but just a demo gun (less than 20 rounds though it). He said he would sell it for $350.

Which one should I go with?

I had the 590A1. They are long and unwieldy for indoor use. Love the capacity, however. It's a workhorse. $299 is a good price if it's in good solid condition.

Someone I trust concerning police shotguns says to beware of police tradeins. Police armorers often gut tradeins of choice parts before selling them.

I don't think these were robbed of anything... local pd switched over to Remington 870 shotguns. Main complaint of the Mossberg was weight.

I wouldn't do it. You don't know how the gun was treated. Just not worth the risk on a defensive firearm.

Most department issued police trade-ins are usually in pretty good internal condition. They aren't range guns and are usually shot during qualifications. Externally, you will see wear. Lots of wear.

Fully inspecting the weapon and its parts before purchasing as well as demanding a return guarentee is not unreasonable. A modicum of due diligence on the part of the purchaser reduces that risk to a minimum.

I plan on going to look at them again this morning. A little rough on the outside isn't a deal breaker for me. As long as the mechanical aspect works I'm sure I'll get faithful service out of it. Remember it was the only shotgun to meet milspec requirement 3443. And it's still in heavy use today by military and law enforcement.

I know nothing of the Benelli but the 590A1 is a heck of a good shotgun, provided it's length is not a liability in your particular application. I have a friend who deals in lots of police trade-ins and has for years, not to mention the guns of that pedigree I've personally owned over the years. This parts-robbing in news to me.

I went and looked at the Mossberg again... didn't buy it. Wanted to explore other guns. Went over to the dealer who had the benelli and saw he had a Remington 870 field model that was near new condition on the used rack. Picked it up for $250. And there is a ton of aftermarket support so I think I may just build this gun.

Thanks for the advice guys.

I too find the LONG 590 A1 heavy. The shorter 18-1/2" is much handier, even with a +1 or +2 mag extension which was my choice of one. The original 20" 590 (no A1) is sweet!
