Savage model 99 new stock and blueing

Last year a buddy of mine had an accident with my step-dad's rifle while elk hunting. He fell and busted the butt-stock in half on a Savage 99 in .300. There are no hard feelings about it since my step-dad loaned him the rifle and my friend is fixing it. He ordered a new stock and I was wondering about getting it reblued as a birthday gift to my step-dad. He has talked about getting it done before so I know he won't be opposed to getting it reblued.

Are there any reasons why I shouldn't have it done? Do any of you Oregon boys know of a shop that does good work? What should I expect to pay?

Well I cannot say I know of a good shop, but I do have a 99 and have to say it is one great rifle even though ammo is getting difficult to come by sometimes.

If the gun is basically original, it may devalue it some what if re-blued, but the stock is not original so it probably does not matter. If the lever still has most of the case hardening color on it, don't blue that part. It sounds like a working gun and not a collector to me, I would blue it.

Re bluing will cut the value of the rifle in half.
Contact Scott at S & S Sporting 208-313-1570.
He is a true Master Riflesmith and does an increadable job in repairing broken stocks. I'm a retired gunsmith, I know just how good Scott is and he is scary good.
The 99 will be worth more with the stock fixed and original bluing than blued with a new stock.
Scott works on a lot of Savage 99's.
His web site is www.savagegunsmithing.com Although the site is mostly about Savage bolt guns, scott is great with the 99's and any other weapon you can think of.
Scotts prices are reasonable and he has a pretty good turn around time.
Scott will also arrange for Fed-X to pick up your rifle right at your home at a cost far less than if you shipped it yourself. No problems with shipping clerks who don't know squat about shipping firearms either. Just double box it and put nothing on the outside of the box indicating there is a firearm inside.
It's all legal in case you were wondering.

On April 24 at a gun show I got a Sav99 in 300Sav in for $280.
Then I noticed that it was heavily modified and had a thumb safety AND a trigger safety.

On April 24 at the same gun show my brother got a nicer Sav99 300S for $180.

I felt stupid so I sold my Sav99 for $300 to someone walking by.
I made $20 for carrying a heavy rifle for 2 hours.

At the next gunshow in May I got a 1950 Marlin 336 30-30 for $165.
My brother got a great pistol for $72.
I give up.

I have rebarrelled a couple Sav99 rifles.
That is lots of work.
Mausers are easy.
