Opinion-7mmWSM vs. 6.5x.284 @ 1,000 yd.

I was looking at building a 6.5 x .284, 1,000 yd. benchrest rifle, BUT, I ran into a '' deal '' on a used 7mm WSM benchrest rifle.
$1700 gets me a complete rifle, base, rings (no scope) with all the dies, brass and bullets.
The price sounds good, but I want to make sure I don't end up with some obscure caliber that's hard to load or just too weird.
I'm new to this type of shooting, so I'd greatly appreciate the opinions of some of you more experienced shooters.
Thanks for your time!

Sir:

May I be frank without offending you - it is NOT personal.
I hate WSMs' - I think they are abortions and I'd not have one

Although I think I have one in my 416 Taylor.

External ballistics are basically identical. The 7mm will have more recoil.

Harry,
With the right equipment, you could shoot the big red nose off the clown at the circus!

If popularity means anything, I have seen a bunch of 6.5x284 rifles even the little bit of Long Range shooting I do. I have not seen a stock 7mm WSM on the line; but there is one guy who wanted a little more capacity and chambered for 7mm WSM A.I. and the other fellow who wanted a little less capacity and shoots a 7mm x .270 WSM. Sounds like a lot of trouble to me, but they are Master class shooters and I am not.
