imr 4198 and 65 gr Sierra Boatail (5.56 load)

any one have a load up for this powder. i keep seeing guys using 63 or 69 gr recipes and the gentleman at the gun shop brought up the 63 gr as a start. just want to get a referance from some other loaders.

Never used either. Only experience close is 69gr sierras out of my AR.

Are you shooting a bolt action or AR?

This is out of my Sierra manual for .223 in an AR15

IMR-4198 under a 69 grain Sierra HPBT
18.8gr - 2500fps
19.4 - 2600fps
20.0 - 2700fps
20.3 - 2750fps

and then

IMR-4198 under a 60 grain Sierra HP
19.4 -2700
20.1 -2800
20.8 -2900
21.1-2950

I see nothing for 65 grain projectiles.

Consult another source as well and compare the numbers. 4198 is fast from what I hear. Start low and work up, checking brass for pressure signs often as you go.

I use that bullet a lot, though I don't use that powder. I have AA2230 behind the 65 grain Sierra GK, and it's about a grain under max. Per Sierra and a phone call I made a year or so ago, you can use the load data for the 63 gr Sierra SMP for the 65 gr GK. That's what I did, but as always I started near min load and worked up to what shot well.

i found the number to the tech guy up there and called them. he gave me the same about the 63 grain. i would have used 2223, varget or tach but they were out. so i ended up going back to get the 4198. will work a load up for it tommorow. its for a AR.

I have a similar dilemma. I need to load some 55 and 62 grain bullets and can't get the powder I want, and all I have on hand is some 4198 that I got for loading 7.62x39.

Hodgdon/IMR does have data for 4198 and .223 caliber on their web site, but based on how many loads they show for 35 to 50 grain bullets, and how there's only one or two (if you treat IMR4198 and H4198 as the same thing) for sixty-something grain bullets, I'm going to conclude that it's a less than optimal match for the heavier projectiles. But desperate times call for desperate measures: I'm going to use 4198 on my 55 grain bullets and hope something better becomes available soon for my 62 grain bullets...

so making sure on the 63gr loads for the 65 grain i call to verify and emailed. now both times the email and call tech said 69 gr recipe for the 65 since there BC and SD are so close. i ask even in a M4 platform. he said it is fine. so after loading some IMR 4198 and 65 gr GK. it seems fine. check to make sure of pressure problems . cases fine. no bulging or none ejection, but am shooting outta of 5.56 cases, not .223 cases. i started at the the recommended 18.3 but stopped at 19.3, .02 below max. worked fine . 1 1/2 groups at 100yds at 19.0 being the best. but i also have backups in the 55 gr hpbt just in case this didnt work.. but until i find some exterminator or acc2230, this will have to do.
