Blueing stainless steel

Sorry if this doesn't go here...

Can a stainless barrel be blued? Would it take?

Not very well. Several products have been sold as bluing compounds for stainless steel, but AFAIK none worked the way they should have. The basic reason is that bluing is refined rust and stainless steel is made specifically to resist rust.

Some manufacturers have tried tricks like plating the stainless steel with iron, then bluing that, or using an anodizing process like that used on aluminum. For a home job, the best solution is usually to just paint it, using one of the several bake-on finishes from Brownell. They look good, are durable, and are available in a range of colors.
