home made casting pot?

ok i have seen a few people make their own casting pots with a container of some kind and a heating element, normaly a a oven heating element. would pretty much any kind of wire stile heating element work? i want to make my own but i think 3500 watts is a bit much for my out buildings eletrical. most premade pots are using a 500 or 700 watt element, would that be ok? thanks

First off are you building this to cast with or to melt scrap down. If for Bullets you will need a way to adjust the temp, I melt my Wheel weights down with a Dutch oven over a propane heater. But cast with a Lee pot
