62 g bullets ordered ?

I ordered 1k bullets from Hi-Tec Ammunition. Got the pulled and resized 62 g for the 223. For 70$ I Have not gotten them yet and am wondering if these are military bullets. I thought I read some forum somewhere that the mil spec bullets arent lead, and that the bullet is longer then normal. If this is true i am looking for any thought for loading, i have Varget powder that i have been using. Any one else try these bullets? Figured for the price they would be great for plinking.

Yeah those are military surplus bullets. They have a steel penetrator in the nose which makes the length of the bullet longer. It doesn't matter accuracy wise if you are shooting a 1:9 or faster barrel. They are good bullets but will eat up steel targets. Fine for shooting at tin cans or paper targets though.

I load these same type pfo bullets with 24.6 gr of Varget. Obviously double check this with your own load data sources, and as always start lower and work up for your own rifle and conditions.

I use this same Varget powder charge for 60 gr Nosler Ballistic tip (.851" bullet length), Barnes 62 gr TSX (0.912"), pulled M855 (0.872"), and Sierra 65 gr BTSP (0.852").

Here are the max pressure loads from my sources for these bullets. I used the M855 bullet for the QuickLoad calculations and all are seated to 2.250". I shoot out of a 5.56 NATO AR15 (62,000 psi) so I use closer to max SAAMI than I normally would.

Quickload max for .223 pressures (55,000 psi) and M855: 24.6 gr

Quickload for NATO pressure (62K psi) and M855: 25.2 gr

Hodgdon max for Sierra 63 SP: 26.4 gr (that is correct, not a transposition of my load)

Barnes max for 62 gr TSX: 25.5 gr

Hornady max for 60 gr VMAx: 24.9

Sierra: does not list Varget for 65 gr BTSP; but IMR4064 which is usually very close to the same charge weight as Varget is listed at 24.7 gr

Nosler max for 60 gr: 24.5 gr

Thanks for the data that will deffinatly be a help in formulating my starting point. Once I get them in i can start some loads and test them out.

Just came in today started going through them gonna start up some loads tommorow to take to the range Saturday. Gonna start at 22g varget and work up to 24g, I have been loading hornady 75g hpbt at 22g and they shoot nice. I remember when I worked those loads out I did 1/2g increments and noticed a huge difference, a 1/2g made. Being 1 1/2" groups to being all overthe target. Suold be a good weekend.
