AAR Tactical Pistol 3 at Asymmetric Solutions USA with Former Seal Team Six Member
Asymmetric Solutions USA is a premier training facility south of Saint Louis, Missouri on an 1300 acre site just south of Farmington, Missouri.
They recently brought Zac Jackson on board as a trainer. Zac brings a wealth of experience, having served 20 years as a US Navy Seal, the last eight as a member of DEVGRU (Seal Team 6). He then went on to a distinguished career as a trainer for various agencies in the federal government. Here's a bit more about Zac.
Zak Jackson, Chief Professional Instructor
Zak spent 20 years in the US Navy as a career SEAL at Naval Special Warfare Group 1 and Group 2, with his last 8 years at Naval Special Warfare Development Group (SEAL Team 6). He is the recipient of four Bronze Stars, three with V for Valor Devices and is the veteran of 11 separate combat deployments all over the globe. Zak was the primary instructor and curriculum developer for multiple programs inside of the Tier 1 and standard NSW training pipeline and has a breadth of subject matter expertise. Prior to joining Asymmetric Solutions, Zak worked as an instructor for the Kennedy Irregular Warfare Center and US Department of State’s Anti-Terrorism Assistance Program.
Zac, simply put, knows his stuff, to put it mildly, and is a SUPERB instructor.
We were fortunate to have him teach our civilian Tac 3 pistol class, since he is the designated professional trainer at ASUSA.
Zac ran us hard, all day and we all learned so much, me particularly.
He had us focus on really dialing in each fundamental aspect of using a handgun, from stance, through presentation. It was simply awesome.
For me, the best "take away" was really taking a hard look at my draw and presentation. Zac emphasizes getting the pistol into action ASAP the minute it is drawn, thinking of the handgun "riding a rail" from high on your chest, pushing it out aggressively and getting those sights on target. His teaching technique, obviously reflecting years of experience, was very enjoyable, since everything he taught was presented professionally, in a kind, supportive manner, with corrections given very constructively and helpfully.
I particularly appreciated how he drilled us on identifying, for ourselves, where our errors were being made and why, everything from not being in the proper stance, to where we were during each phase of the draw stroke.
Frankly, it was a revelation and I've taken now a LOT of classes.
A twenty year Navy Seal veteran with many real-world combat deployments with rounds coming back in his direction many times gives him precisely the kind of experience we all need to hear about what it is like in the real-world and learning techniques for engaging from various positions, even from flat on one's back, learning how to shoot from cover, and how to use concealment effectively.
He also emphasized index shooting at relatively closer ranges.
He walked us through a great course of dry fire skill practice for four hours, followed by live fire excercises for five hours in the afternoon, having us work on putting rounds accurately on 6" paper plates from a whole host of positions, with movement, back, forth, sideways, turning from left and right and doing complete 180 turns, presenting each time from the holster, firing controlled pairs.
I can't say enough about the training and the curriculum at ASUSA.
Guys, if you can, check it out. We have folks now driving in from Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, TX, etc.

Rangemaster Instructor's Course Sept. 6-8 2013, McLoud, OK AAR
Kirk Clark, Albuquerque, New Mexico
I would like to start by saying thank you to Tom Givens, our assistant instructors Spencer and Gabe, our host Wes of Practical Shooting LLC, my brother for accompanying me to yet another training adventure in a far away place and all 19 of my fellow students who came together to make this a great long weekend of training.
Link to course description: http://www.rangemaster.com/classes/h...on-course.html
The Rangemaster Instructor's Course serves several purposes. It teaches students critical information, tactics, techniques, mindset and statistics. The class also teaches shooting methodology, proper shooting coaching and tests student's skill level on the range. Lastly, students are tested on their ability to retain knowledge taught over the course of the weekend and available in the workbook and to present knowledge to fellow classmates in a 5 minute presentation assigned to the student by Tom Givens.
This was my fourth instructor's course, the first three being through Sig Academy, the NRA and Tactical Response. The Tactical Response Instructor's class comes close, but in the end I believe that if you could pick only one of the above classes, you should pick the Rangemaster course. The Rangemaster course is the only one of the above that goes into detail about how to properly coach a shooter on the firing line. It also forces students to give informative, properly delivered coaching and to receive and implement the same.
The Course is a nearly even split between class time and range time. At first this might seem a bit range heavy for an instructor's course, but the split worked just right because of the way range time is used in the course. When you are not shooting you are observing and coaching. When you are shooting you are implementing the coaching given by your training partner. Whether in the classroom or on the range you are in turn learning and teaching, developing vital skills as an instructor.
Speaking to our class specifically, there were 20 students, with a pleasantly and surprisingly high 5 female shooters. Law Enforcement was also healthily represented. This class was notable for being a "that guy" free zone with all the students being safe, attentive and well adjusted. Skill levels ranged from very new to very experienced. I managed to win the Casino shoot, but finished in second place overall after being bested by the very talented Lieutenant Chuck Haggard.
I would strongly recommend this course to any shooter. Whether or not you plan on instructing full time or part time, you will (hopefully) eventually be given the responsibility and opportunity of teaching a friend, family member, child or spouse the basics of shooting, firearms safety, firearms storage, and or the realities and legalities of the use of firearms in self defense. This class will help you with all of the above, maximizing the learning experience of your loved ones, your customers and yourself. As usual Tom Givens offers an amazing training experience that is presented in proper context and executed successfully. Two Thumbs way up.

Bob Marvel Custom 1911 Classes
Deep River Customs, a maker of quality 1911 pistols, is proud to sponsor Bob Marvel, who will be teaching custom 1911 courses in Asheboro, NC, beginning in April 2015.
Bob Marvel is nationally and internationally acclaimed for his craftsmanship in building exceptionally reliable and accurate 1911 pistols. In the past thirty years he has built national championship and world championship winning pistols, as well as pistols for the military, law enforcement, and for civilian use. Bob is well known for a series of .22/1911 conversion designs, 1911 design improvements, and products for the 1911, as well as being a consultant in the firearms industry.
This will be a thorough, comprehensive 10 day course to teach the participants how to build a custom 1911 pistol using specific knowledge of each part. The requirement for the 10 day schedule is due to the amount of information, knowledge, and custom pistol building skills that are to be passed on to the students. Simply put, five days is not enough time.
The classes will involve supervised “hands-on” training, lectures, class discussion, trouble shooting, range time and reviews. At the end of the course, each student will walk away with a custom built 1911 pistol, knowledge of how the pistol works, and how to build and repair 1911 pistols from the training acquired in class.
Brief course overview:
Introduction and basic gunsmith hand tool use
Slide to frame fit including breech prep, extractor, firing pin stop, feeding relief
Barrel preparation and barrel/bushing fit
Action work – trigger, hammer, sear, disconnector
Frame work – grip safety, thumb safety, mainspring housing, ejector, plunger tube, magazine tuning
Range – test fire along with malfunction and troubleshooting instruction
