A couple questions for shooters in Ga.

Okay, I have most of my necessaries. However, most had to be ordered. My main questions are ..

1. Is there ANY place close (with-in about a 30 mi range) to the Locust Grove area to get pistol supplies?

2. What ranges are available close to this area.

3. Are there still any events worth going to in the area?

Now I have tried Gander Mountain and Dicks. Plenty of long gun ammo and supplies, but, other than powder and caps nothing around here, not even balls. Also talked to some mom & pop stores and quite a few people that were raised here in the area about this info, but, all any of them has said is .. "It used to be a big thing around here, but, nowadays no one does it anymore."
I have a hard time believing that since I have heard a couple large long guns going off in the area, but, that could just be people on their own property also.
Appreciate any help..

If you're interested in Civil War black powder competition shooting, check out the North-South Skirmish Association (http://www.n-ssa.org).

Here is a map that shows where competitions happen:

There is a range near you in Denhamville.

There is a skirmish this weekend just south of Birmingham, Alabama, which is about 4 hours from you.

You may be hard pressed to find black powder supplies locally. There is one gun shop in Huntsville, Alabama that semi-routinely carries powder and caps. But they often do not have powder.

I end up buying my powder and primers from Back Creek Gun Shop (www.blackpowderva.com/) but you'll pay hazmat shipping that way.

I cast my own bullets. For revolvers you can buy Hornady swaged round balls from places like Cabela's or MidwayUSA. I don't think it's worthwhile to buy Minie balls mail order as they may get dented in transit and have to be sized anyway. Easier to cast your own.

You can sometimes find black powder supplies at the big box stores like Gander Mountain or Bass Pro Shops, but it's usually stuff for modern inline black powder rifles like 209 caps and sabot rounds. However I can usually find pistol caps at our local Gander Mountain. None of the big box stores carry real black powder but they often carry substitutes like Pyrodex. It's because of the regulations for storing black powder, as I understand it.

Check with the NMLRA - National Muzzleloading Rifle Assoc.. I don't have a copy of their publication - "Muzzleblasts" - handy but "local clubs" used to be listed along with the contact info. You might be able to hook up with one of them.

I used to shoot once a month with a group near me here in MI - a very informal shoot - just a bunch of guys getting together. Lot's of times, everybody would throw a trinket of some kind in a pile and the highest scoring shooter got first pick and down the line - everybody went home with something. We used a variety of targets from suckers to paper to cans. Lot's of fun.

Google NMLRA and you might be able to get the info off of their site or at least a contact to find out.
