Loose holster Dan has some good recommendations, but if you land on a Sig X5, you'll do just fine, too.

Can you just pull the hammer back and do single action on the first shot?

For the SAO X5 L-1 trigger, yes you can thumb cock the hammer or cocked and locked.

Sig X-Five Competition in 9mm.
Big, heavy stainless steel 9mm - 19 round capacity. Absolutely, hands down the most accurate gun I've ever shot. Single action only trigger is excellent. The bottom line: this is my favorite handgun. I'd never ever ever sell it! Even though the X-Five Level one was my first choice because of the adjustable trigger, the X-Five Competition fits me so perfectly, I don't know how I'd adjust the trigger. Sorry, but if I was going to spend $1500. It sure would'nt be on a plastic gun. A nice heavy Smith & Wesson 1911,or a Sig Sauer 1911. My 2 cents.

I'd go for a Smith & Wesson Model 945. Of all the many semi-auto pistols I own, the 945 is the favorite.

Browning Hi Power or H&K Mark 23 just to name one among many...Personally, I have never paid >$1K on a handgun--not in the least based on "ethics" or the like but MONEY...For me that means the long guns get "serious" money attention but, hey, it's all subjective in the end...

I don't know about "best", but at the moment, this is what I'd get if they were actually available:
Dan Wesson "Guardian" - C-bob 1911 in 9mm or Tanfoglio Witness Hunter 6" SS in 10mm auto with $500 left over for ammo or RIA MicroMag .22TCM & 9mm combo 1911 with $800 left over for ammo Yeah, the SW Perf. Ctr. 945 or 952 are uber-sweet, high-quality rigs, but dunno what they cost. Whoever said, I sure wouldn't get a plastic gun - x 100. |

I'd buy 2 or 3 cheaper yet "quality" guns
But that's just me---I would get much more use and enjoyment from say a .22--9mm and .357 mag.

I would get a USP45 V1 and a nice holster for it and use the leftover 500 or so for training. Either that or a Mk25 and still more training. I am pretty happy with my P30 also.

I would buy one $500 gun and one $1000 gun. A j-frame with a ct grip and a Colt 1911 of some sorts.
