Howdy, all...

Just bought a nice Browning BLR in 358 Win, and I would sure appreciate any advise on a good all around deer-elk load. I prefer one load that will work well on both animals for simplicities sake. Have been thinking of 225, or 250 gr Partition, or 250 gr Grand Slam. Any thoughts?

Thanks, Mac

.358 loads

rogermac,

Try a 225gr. Gameking, Win. 748, Fed.LR mag. in Win .358 cases. 1.5" at 100yds. form my pre.81 BLR. I would stay away from 250gr. loads if your shots will be over 150yds. Great for up close however. I've also had good luck with Win factory loads (200gr SilverTips) and 200gr Rem.with 4198. Which BLR do you have, pre.81 or the model 81? If it is a pre81 there some mag. problems you will need to address.

JR,

Thanks for the tip, I've been thinking something in a 225 might be the best compromise, as living out here in Arizona, longer shots are likely in some parts of the state. (Although most of my local friends, who have hunted here for years, say they have taken most game at under 200yds. Still, a lot different than Western NY, hunting with shotguns!)

My rifle is a BLR81, by serial # list on Brownings web-site, built 1982. Bought it off a good friend who finally found his dream Savage 99-358. Has one spare mag, Redfield base & rings, and I picked up a Weaver V3 from Natchez, on sale for $99. Plan to use this for shorter range hunting, out to maybe 200-250yds, and pick up something a little flatter shooting for more open areas.
