can you make a mosin shoot 7.63X39?

I'd like a bolt action 7.62X39 rifle on the cheap. Do you think you could set back the factory barrel and rechamber for X39? Could you make a chamber insert to switch of th X39?

I'd make one on an enfield but the outfit doing the work has moved on (up?) to 45-70 #4 enfields

That hard part is going to e extraction with the x39 lacking a rim.

It would take some custom work to even make that happen.

The chamber size is different, and you would need to change the bolt as well. Personally I don't think its worth it.

The Mosin Nagant already shoots cheap ammo. Why would you downgrade to a less powerful caliber?

Don't need any more power than the X39 and I don't want to be bothered with another cartridge

Youd have about the same money and even more of a headache doing it than you would be to just buy a bolt action 7.62x39.

I understand the point of not having 20 different calibers.... but I REALLY suggest reading up on specs to bolt action 7.62x39... its actually more complicated than you'd think.

Most of the overseas surplus ammo that is "cheap" for the x39 uses harder primers due to being designed for the AK and SKS... Sometimes bolt actions have a hard time with the ammo.

Also, there are actually different specs to chambers and ammo for the x39... A lot of american made rifles are made with a .308 diameter bore, however a lot of the surplus ammo being sold for the x39 is actually a .311 or .312 bore size, so often times they will have more issues.

The Savage model 10 FCM Scout will probably be the cheapest route.. however if you plan on shooting Euro-surplus ammo, the CZ 527 is the better choice due to the better extractor and its more heavy duty over all. Also the barrel is the proper .311 bore.

Rebarreling to 7.62x39 will almost certainly be an extensive or labor intensive exercise.

You might be happier going with the Savage Model 10 FCM Scout rifle or the CZ 527 as HKFan9 suggests.

But, you mentioned a barrel insert. There is plenty of precedent for doing that and the insert could have the 7.62x59 rim so extraction and insert headspacing could work in the normal manner.

You or your gunsmith would need to use a reamer to get the inside of the insert right, which includes proper attention to headspacing of the 7.62X39 inside the insert.

A fair bit of trial and error may be needed to get it right and to assure safe use, but once done, you might find a market in the survivalist community if indeed it hasn't been done already.

I have used chamber adaptors to fire 32ACP out of a Ge98 and an MAS 1936.
Worked fine,allowed for some "gallery shooting."

You could remove the gas piston from SKS. That would make it a bolt action somewhat.

Sorry but what you're asking can't be done on the cheap. If you want a cheap shooting nagant, just buy bulk 7.62x54R. Or you could reload for it and the x39 by buying a crapload of unloaded 7.62 bullets at wholesale and hand loading both cartridges with the same bullet.

You MIGHT be able to find a ruger M77 bolt action chambered in 7.62x39 but AFAIK few were made and they are very rare, and often expensive due to this.

Why not just enjoy the awesome-ness of shooting steel core ammo in a nagant? For marginally more expensive ammo you get a lot more muzzle energy and range, and a flatter trajectory...And due to heavier bullets, less wind drift. The money you save on the rifle will likely buy more than enough ammo to make up for the fact the 7.62x39 is $.05 cheaper.

Sounds like an expensive idea to me.

Just getting a 30-06 Pre 64 M70 to feed 308 cartridges was not a gimme. Had to buy the short action magazine box and bolt stop ($$$

) to make it work. You are going to have a lot more fun getting this to work.

They aren't the most accurate rifles in the world, (for that matter, neither is the Mosin) but they make a 7.62x39 barrel for the Rossi W.

If I remember correctly the Rossi can't be ordered as a complete gun with the 7.62x39 barrel. So you would have to order the rifle with one of the barrels they offer with it, then buy the 7.62x39 barrel. That way Rossi gets to sell more barrels

I'm not sure about the bore diameter, you may be right. If it is indeed .308 bore that would make it better for reloading, but not for your surplus ammo

Yes you can, but I wouldn't spend the money trying. Not when there are other options out there. One rifle no one has mentioned yet is the Zastava Mini Mauser, you might be able to find one labeled as a Charles Daly on Remington 799 as well.
