Mini 14 Ranch or Tactical

I just purchased a Mini 14 and am pretty stoked, but I have a question. The guy at the store said all 3 on display were Ranch rifles, but two of them had the 16" barrels as opposed to 18.5". I decided on the stainless 16". Now on my rifle it's stamped "Ranch" but the model number is 5819 which according to the Ruger website is Tactical.

Is this like a case of "All whiskey is bourbon but not all bourbon is whiskey" ...i.e. "All Tacticals are Ranch rifles but not all Ranch rifles are Tacticals"? Doesn't really matter in the end but I'm just trying to get it all straight!

Can't speak for the 581 but this is what a 582 Tactical looks like.

I think it's a lot of conjecture, but here's my opinion. They are both ranch rifles. Since your example has a shorter barrel, I think that's what technically might make it a tactical. I am unsure if this designation has anything to do with stocks or rails or any other features, but definitely appears to be primarily focused towards barrel length.

This is what I am thinking too. I didn't get the one with rails (was nice, but another $130.00) and that one also had the 16" barrel. So what it seems is they are all considered "Ranch" but a shorter barrel and flash suppressor make it a "Tactical".

I don't think TMD's is a Ranch though

All new Mini's are Ranch's----not all are Tacticals

It's not all that uncommon for this type of thing to happen. My Beretta M9A1 says Mod 92FS on the slide even though it is clearly not a 92. Mine is not special in that way either, all M9A1's, with maybe the exception to the ones issued to Marines, have a 92FS slide.

Back before the 580 series, you could get a "Mini 14 Ranch" or just a "Mini 14". The only difference was that the Ranch Rifle had integral scope mount bases on the upper receiver, and maybe a difference in the open sights because the non-Ranch version didn't have the factory scope provision, and supposedly the Ranch had a different extractor that pitched rounds at a lower angle to avoid hitting the scope.. either they forgot that on mine or it didn't work LOL.

A few years ago they started marketing all of them as Ranch Rifles, and I'm presuming they dropped the version without the scope bases. They probably got tired of machining two different receivers for the same rifle, and I would imagine the non-Ranch didn't sell as well and got cut for cost saving purposes.

The Ranch rifles, at least as far back as 1998 when I bought mine new, had "Ruger RANCH RIFLE CAL. .223" on the receiver. Dad has a non-Ranch from the early 90's that has "Ruger MINI 14 CAL. .223" on it.

As far as I know, the Tactical comes with a flash hider and a 20 round magazine, where the regular Ranch Rifle comes with a 5 rounder and no flash hider. I'm not sure about barrel lengths between the two.

The Ranch Rifle is a variant of the current generation Ruger Mini 14. It has a conventional fixed wood or composite stock, a tapered 18" barrel, and a protected blade front sight. The serial # begins with 581 or 582, if I remember correctly.

What Ruger lists as the Tactical has a 16" tapered barrel threaded 1/2x28 with a flash suppressor. There has been also the NRA edition Mini 14 with a 16" tapered unthreaded barrel, a winged front sight, and a Hogue black rubber stock.
Could it be that ruger used the range rifle receivers to manufacture the tactical a?

P.S. all bourbon IS whiskey. (Not all whiskey is bourbon). Someone had to say it!

Thanks for the information and history everyone! Mine is stamped "Ruger Ranch rifle cal .223". But because it has the 16.5" barrel, it is still considered a "Tactical" based on Ruger's web site.

I'm going to the range tomorrow, can't wait to try her out!!

my mini-14 is a ranch rifle as well, it was made in '91, and on it reads "Ranch Rifle 223 Cal." and has a 16.5" bbl.
