rebarreling questions
I have a savage model 10 in .308, i would like to change it over to either a 7mm-08 or a 6.5 creedmoor. What all needs to be done to do this and how much would it cost?

I've rebarrelled 3-4 Savage BA rifles w/o much problem. Getting the barrel nut loose may be the most difficult part of the job. I didn't even go to the expense of using gauges-just used a box of factory cartridges. Worked fine but I can't recommend this practice for others.
Best advice to stay within similar case head and lenght parameters. Saves time and parts costs. |

Besides the flat steel barrel nut wrench, you should also figure on a barrel vise with the appropriate bushing for your barrel.
I use one like what brownells sells. Factory guns are often a bear to take apart the first time. After that, you only need to torque them to maybe 80 ft-lbs and they are easier to work with. |

You don't need a barrel vise, they are nice to have but not necessary. I've used action wrenches and even a crescent wrench on the recoil lug to take off the barrel. I just use a 4" vise with a leather padded jaw these days.
BTW if you use the ER Shaw kit you don't need to buy the gages the are included either the kit. |

Dont even need a no go gague, just use a shim. Shaw might have gotten better in the last couple of years, but from what I have seen of them they are a step down from a factory barrel. I'm not saying that it wont shoot if it aint Lilja, but I have no plans to ever use shaw again.

Kraig, you install new barrels with barrel nuts on other brands of rifle as well. The trick is getting the old barrel off.
