High Standard Derringer DM-101 - help

I have a High Standard DM-101 Derringer, 22 mag, from the 80's. It is in great condition but it will not fire. It was working great, but I broke it by dry firing (I did use spent cases as the manual advised). I took it to both gun shops in town and they were not able to help me--parts are not readily available.

I was able to find the manual online--which is very helpful... but I was wondering if anybody out there had successfully worked on these High Standard Derringers? I'm pretty sure I can get her taken apart OK, but not sure I can fix or reassemble!

Does anybody out there have any experience or direction to point me? Anybody ever do any work on this gun?

Thanks!

Have you taken it apart to figure out what exatly broke? I've tinkered with them for a few years. I 'might' be able to help you.

And, they are easier to take apart than to put back together...But, it can be done. Start with a BIG white towel and keep a magnet handy.

While some of them are sold out, Gun Parts Corp. still list many of the parts for the DM-101 as being in stock.

No, I have not yet taken it apart. I will do so and see if I can figure out the part(s) I need. Thanks, Sgt and Web, for your help!

My guess is if you were dry firing the .22 mag, Its rim fire so the firing pins probably broken. Just my guess though.

Thanks for your input, Sgt, and Denezin. I have yet to take it apart, but I think the firing pin may be broken, Denezin. The trigger still actuates and seems to fire, yet it does not fire. Normally, this gun leaves a good indent in the rim. There is no such indent on the rims of the bullets I tried to fire.

If neither barrel will fire, it is probably a broken striker. That gun has a hammer that is a sort of hollow shell and inside is a pivoting striker that is cammed up to fire the top barrel and let down to fire the lower, depending on the position of a cam wheel that is indexed when the hammer is cocked by the trigger. The gun is not extremely difficult to work on but I agree on the white towel and magnet. Make sure you take the tension off the mainspring and remove it before trying to dissassemble the rest of the gun.

Have you tried calling Hi Standard? They have a web site and may be able to refer you to someone who can fix it or even fix it themselves. It's worth a shot. No pun intended.

The striker is broken

I finally got around to taking it apart, and it is indeed a broken striker.

I'm on the hunt for that part... getting a new one into the hammer assembly may be a little tricky, but I think I can actually fix it--once I get the part.

Thanks again to all for getting me this far.

It's fixed!

I received the new striker in the mail ($17 inc tax and shipping). I didn't want to bend or damage the striker assembly when removing the existing striker, so my local gunsmith helped me out with that ($15). Putting it back together was easy; they aren't too complicated.

I had to wait a few days to get out to the range and test the repair, but I'm happy to report--It works!

Thanks for your help all!

Good for you! They are neat little guns. I have one that sometimes gives a light strike...I can't find a magnum mainspring anywhere. May have to get creative.

Order the parts from Gun Parts Corp?

I have a DM-101 also, that fires sometimes. Like, one trigger pull fires, second one doesn't, third one doesn't (because that barrel already fired), fourth pull fires the second barrel. Based on this thread (Thanks!), I'm going to open it up and have a look. Wondering if anyone has a suggestion for most likely cause?

Could be a problem with the ammo, or with the case support in one chamber, or with the striker not being properly positioned for one chamber. I can't tell based only on that information, but good luck in finding the problem.
