Why aren't 308 "AR-15's" very popular? - Page 4

I don't need a clip full of .308 to hunt deer with. A single round of .30-30 or .35 remington does the trick out of a lever gun. If it takes you 5-10 rounds of .308 to kill a deer, I think you need some more practice more than you need to be in the woods.

I think it also depends on where you live. I live in the Pacific Northwest and 308 ARs are pretty popular around here. The AR 15s have the larger market share but 308s are the second choice for a lot of us. I just shoot paper with my LR308 but I get a real kick out of shooting it. And I really enjoy seeing how small a group I can shoot with factory ammo. My LR 308 will shoot .625 four shot groups at 100 yards with factory ammo! Every time I go to a local 100 yard outdoor range there is always 2 - 8 of us with 308 ARs and usually another 2-6 with 308 rifles. Before the recent craziness the LGS have always carried a good selection or 308 ARs and they didn't sit on the self for too long before being sold.

This thread's got some comments that no army uses an AR10.

The US Army got rid of their 5.56 platforms for long range matches and used the AR10 to compete with the 7.62 NATO chambered M1's and M1A's at 1000 yards. It took a bit to convince the NRA to allow the AR10 as a "service rifle" but the Army got it done.

People use their fun guns for different things, and none are wrong (when legal). It's not like you see "WIC Approved" signs outside of gun shops and there is a legit complaint about the money being spent here. If someone wants to do whatever with a $1000+ gun, it doesn't make them a mall ninja.

But to the OP, those of us on a budget of any sort know why the cheaper to buy, shoot and customize gun is the more popular one. The fact that many of us carried one overseas is just another thing that adds to the popularity.

In regards to the OP, I don't think .308 ARs compete very well with M1A/M14s, FALs, and G3/CETME/PTR91s. The ARs have a lot of things to offer that the others dont such as modularity and ease of mounting optics but that hasn't managed to persuade folks from their favorite, already well established battle rifle.
