sks 7.62x39

Long story short got a guy coming over tomorrow that wants to trade a sks 7.62x309 to me for some lawn equipment. I really don't know much about these rifles, it comes with some accessories, ammo, and a shoulder harness but I am not sure what all it has until I see it tomorrow. My question is what are they worth? He tells me it is near new, he has put 40 rounds through it. All I know at this point is 7.62x39, I am sure it is a Chinese version. Any info on these, and if there is anything I should look out for. Thanks

On-line, they are currently averaging about $500 (data here) recently. The SKS is rugged and reliable in its stock form, bubba modifications do not help the value.

Chinese SKSs are great. In my opinion I'd rather have a military version vs. the commercial ones that were also imported. The military ones seem to be more worn but also seem a little sturdier to me.

The things to look out for---modifications and rotten wood.

I have shot goats, pigs, fallow, red and sika deer with an SKS.
I have 2 unfired chinese ones in my safe atm.
Just sold a russian one witch had done a LOT of work for an offer i couldnt refuse.. allowed me to get into my 10/22 TD.

Mine shot saucer sized groups at 100m with the iron sights although I am a crap shot so Im sure it coulda done better.

They are cheap to run, fun to use.

Take it, you wont regret it

I paid $345 this time last year for my Yugo SKS if that's any indication to what they are worth these days. Mine appeared to be in unfired condition although there's not really any way to tell for sure. In any event it didn't have very many rounds through it. The Chinese and Russians are going for more than the Yugos (Russians are going for a lot more). Some variants are even more desirable check out Survivors SKS boards for more details on each variant. Prices have gone way up since I bought my rifle due to the current panic. They aren't making any more of these rifles so don't expect prices to come back down.

I have a Norinco SKS that accepts AK mags. Great and accurate little gun. I bought it new back in the 80's for $189. Am tempted to sell it now with the current prices but just can't do it.
I say go for it!

Well I got it, here is a pic. It was bought in the late 90's it is preban chinese from what I can tell. The wood is in excellent shape, he says he has shot less than 40 rds through it, it looks clean as a whistle. I traded a rider mower with trailer for it. Came with the stripper clip, about 100 rds of ammo, and he is gonna bring me some more ammo once he finds it. I don't think I did too bad. Now the questions what is this rifle worth? I don't plan on selling it but I was not looking for one either, it kinda fell in my lap.

That's a great "purchase". I already have an AR, but if I were to buy another intermediate cartridge semi-auto it would be an SKS.

Looks like a decent shooter. I really like my norinco. I use mine for the short range deer hunting that we in my area.

Yes, you did okay with the trade, especially with the gun mania in full swing. Personnally, I don't like them much. The triggers are terrible although can be improved by a good smith. I had a Ruskie once but sold it. It was accurate enough but too heavy for a light caliber rifle, IMO. If you shoot cheap ammo, make sure you clean out the gas port. They will corrode and gum up the works if not cleaned.

You can find ammo but you have to live on your computer! I was online tues and checked SG ammo they had 556 and 7.62x39 I was lucky to get 500rds of wolf. All the ammo was gone in 5min. It's getting tough out there

If you set the mail notice at SGAmmo and have a smart phone connected to your email you can get right on it.

But dont wait 30 minutes. I learned that lesson. Several hundred cases with a one case limit wont last 30 minutes.
