Buying ammo in Illinois without a FOID?
I am planning a trip to Chicago this weekend.
Now I am trying to find out if I can buy ammo there along the way (if I can find any) As a MO resident. From what I am reading a non-resident from a neighboring state can buy rifle or shotgun ammo but not handgun? I specifically am looking for .22lr - that can be handgun or rifle ammo. Any ideas? I'd like to know if it is even possible before wasting my time stopping at every Walmart along the way.

I can't 100% answer your question because I have to show my FOID 80% of the time weather I am buying ammo in IL or IN.
If your driving to Chicago just take a slight detour to Indiana and get what your in need of. Cabelas is a short trip East of Chicago on I80/94. Heck if your driving why not just stop in MO before you cross state lines?

I only have 1000 rounds though and could use some more. I thought it could break up the drive and make it go faster if I had a quest.

Walmart was the only place around here (Kane county) that had any real selection. When I went yesterday after work, the girl the was stocking the ammo case. They had everything I wanted. Cabelas was even sold out of 30-30. Go figure.

Yes, they are pretty strict about ammo in IL.
But Indian, my daughter could throw a box up on the counter at Cabelas and they wouldn't even question it - most of the time. I swing by there all the time, but they did card me once I think because of seeing I was from Illinois for handgun ammo. Not recently though. I have plenty of .22 and load my own 9mm so I am not sure what the shortage is about. Big buying spree? Why would ammo be out, the proposed new laws would really only affect high capacity magazines and big ar-15 style weapons which I don't really have anyway. |
