Even though she shoots left handed as I do, the Ruger Hawkeye Compact .223 is a great small rifle and fun to shoot. My wife loves mine.

I bought this not too long ago for the girls, it shoots 55gr. the best out of it's 1:9 twist barrel. I tried various bullet weights, 55, 60, 62, 69 and 75gr out of the hot n cold barrel, it didn't matter, 55's did the best all the way around. But if Ruger has truly fixed their Mini 14 accuracy issues that would be a great little plinker. Aside from the flat top AR being easier to mount a red dot sight to, the Mini 14 might just be the perfect little rifle for small statured people.

M1 Carbine
If you get her a M1 Carbine you'll live to regret it.
After you show her where the controls are that will be the last time you get to touch it. Experience.

Since I send every female shooter I know to Pax's site (Cornered Cat), I recommend you heed her advice about the AR15. And if she want's to plink for the fun only, the S&W MP 15-22 is a really nice, light-weight plinker that will have similar controls and accepts foregrips, etc.
(P.S., I'm left-handed and have no issues with the 15-22 or any AR15 with a deflector. Without a deflector, some AR's fling brass just past my right ear, which is a little disconcerting at times. Of course, there's always a LH Stag

I built an AR with a NFA lower and a PSA light weight middy upper that my gf loves. I put a Ranier Arms compensator on it to completely kill all recoil (but make it less useful for HD). I waited for sales and built it super cheap ($600 for everything) but with the craziness now I don't think I could do it again.
She also loves my Ruger .44 Carbines and is a wicked good shot with them. They don't make those anymore but they can be found used for $350 - $400if you look around a little bit. Here in Virginia where you can't hunt much with .223/5.56 the .44 carbine would probably be a bit more functional. Last edited by BoomieMCT; January 14, 2013 at 11:01 AM. |
