barrel recrowning?

A quick question thats all. What is the standard rate to recrown a pistol barrel? I have sp101 that has had some dings in its muzzle since i got it, when i get some money i may have it crowned to remove these.

Is it cosmetic, or does it reach into the rifling? If it's cosmetic, you don't necessarily need to re-crown, the dings can be filed and sanded out. If it does reach into the rifling, you can rent re-crowning kits for a pretty reasonable price.

I believe it is a cosmetic thing as i cannot see it reaching into the rifling or the bore, but its pretty close to it. love this gun so much i just hate looking at these dings.

Under $50, it'll depend on what you want done.

Any time you change the crown, you run the risk of losing some accuracy. It's a job I'd entrust only to a first rate gunsmith. If your accuracy hasn't been degraded, I'd leave well enough alone!

Marine armorers that I spoke with at Camp Perry six years ago, did the job on a lathe, and only when absolutely necessary. Cleaning rod damage was the prime source of muzzle damage in their opinion.

not only does that barrel look crowned i think it may be counterbored.

Thanks for the heads up folks, Truth is i do not know whether or not these dings have affected its accuracy, its been this way since i got it. I hit center ring from ten yards away and all over the paper from 15 truthfully. I shoot at 8 inch paper plates made into targets. Cannot tell for sure if more can be squeezed out of this 2 1/4 revolverby me.

I sent two of my barrels (9mm & .40) off to a well known gunsmith on another forum & had "target" crowns added. It cost $80 for both including return shipping & I had them back in my hands 7 days from when I shipped them. Not bad at all.

Here where i live the only gunsmith i know of took 6 months to get a double barreled shotgun back to my dad with a new firing pin. Sounds like you got an excelent deal, could you suply me with the contact info for this gunsith of yours?

Try shooting it from a rest, or sand bags very slowly and deliberately. Try to take all the human element out of the shooting. See how tight it groups and then determine if that's good enough for you.

Thanx for that info. If anything happens i may hit this guy up, and ill do the sandbag thing also. I know two things 1 this gun shoots better for me with rubber grips than with my badgers on it, but not by very much, 2 since ive been shooting with this gun, my pistol shooting across the board got better. Thanks again folks you save me from much trial and error.

Don't worry about the accuracy issue, if you are going to keep the gun and it bothers you and you have the bucks, get it fixed.
