I friend of mine summed it up pretty good when I showed him my new Ruger SP101 2.25" 357mag. When someone pulls out a black poly gun you know something wrong, when someone pulls out a chunky stainless steel revolver you know S@#! about to get real!
I laughed pretty hard at that one, I carry my SP101 everyday and it is a BadA-- looking revolver.

The one pointed at me was pretty intimidating. I didn't think to ask the gentleman what brand or caliber it was.

I would fear the person behind it more than the gun I think. A 6' ft tall or larger individual would be pretty intimidating with a large gun. If just basing it on a gun then a larger caliber revolver, black hawk or SP101, or a 1911. I love the line in Grand Torino when walt pulls the gun on those kids,"Did you see the size of that HAND CANNON!" HAHAHA!

Point a Ithica Auto Burglar at someone, you can't get any scarier than one of them.

![]() Ok, its actually an AOW, but, I have fired it with one hand (birdshot)... I have climbed out of my squad with it and it has an immediate calming effect, so, I suppose it qualifies. |

Where are the ivory grips and $400 compensator? When you locate those we'll talk about a new paint job.

Only the gun pointed at me intimidates me, and then not for long if I have mine with me.

I'm not particularly worried about one pointed at me on purpose. I imagine that's unlikely to happen. The most intimidating firearms are the ones at my LGS/Range for rent to any Tom, Dick, or Moron that walks in the door.

It's mean to think there should be more involved in renting a handgun to someone than "Age? Check!" "This is the dangerous end. If you don't keep it pointed down range we'll gently remind you, no matter how many times you sweep the muzzle over our other customers."?

Any revolver .357 on up loaded with a cylinder full of hollow points pointed at you. I think that is the best car jack gun because if the guy isn't scared enough to run away from that he's either on meth or zombie. Either way it's go time.

The Landcaster four barrel double action "Howdah" pistol in .476 or the double in .577 caliber.

Intimidating
I used to own a Ruger P97 45 ACP-the pistol just LOOKED more menacing than a 1911.

Yep, but after you fire it and it whacks you on the head and you are sitting on your tushy - as in videos - you won't be that intimidating.
Assuming you miss - I suppose.

Any weapon pointed at your face from a few inches away is a major pucker factor, even a .22.
However, and objectively, the larger the bore the more intimidating. It's been more than 25 years but I would still swear under oath I believed the muzzle was at least 2" wide, even though I know it was several times less. Thanks for the memory

I've interviewed quite a bit of robbery victims, and those impressed by the perp's guns nearly always use two expressions:
-It was THIS big! -And it was silver! |

Micro, you nailed it.
It really was "that big" but "gun metal black". Luckily it was a SWAT guy on the other end and not a banger coming through the door.
