OP,

sounds like your mind was made up from the beginning to go see the gunsmith. Why'd you ask for input? Are you missing something? You pulling the trigger unlocked the action in your shotgun. The recoil of the shotgun blast opened said action, much like an inertia driven semi-auto shotgun without a recoil system to spring the bolt back into battery. If broken in enough, every pump shotgun I've owned has been able to do this. It's not as common in Mossbergs because they rarely slicken up to the degree 1300's and 870's do. Shoot and/or rack one enough and it will, all the same.

I wish I was the gunsmith you were taking the gun to, you'd be an easy hundred bucks, that's for sure.

Colostomy: Did you actually read the OP? I thought I made it pretty clear what my intentions were, and that I was planning to take it to the gunsmith. I also thought that it was pretty apparent that I submitted this simply for the purpose of having a discussion on something I'd not dealt with before. Furthermore, I also indicated [in post #5] that the gunsmith will not charge me for the work, because I'm letting him use the gun for instructional purposes in the class he teaches.

Apology happily accepted, friend, no hard feelings at all! I shall indeed report back as soon as I can...frankly, all of these differing opinions have me a bit uncertain, and anxious to find out what's up with Pop's Mossberg. Stay tuned.

My 870 is no Wingmaster but an Express with about 1,000 to !,500 rounds through it. I will try those tests. Glad I read this, else I would have freaked the first time it happens.
