My recommendation for the "best" choice in 1911 for a mid-range budget is the Ruger SR1911.

I thought for sure I was going to buy the SR1911, but I REALLY did not like how the trigger and grip safety were loose and flimsy feeling. The trigger rattled and had a lot of play. The grip safety felt flimsy as well.
I ended up buying a Springfield Range Officer and a Beretta PX4 9mm compact.
