FFL vs. Suppressor Purchase
Today I was on Netflix and I was watching Sons of Guns and noticed that they make suppressors. I have access to the equipment to do so, but found out I need an FFL before I even attempt. I also know that I have to pay the $200 transfer tax on a suppressor if I buy it. The FFL application fee is also $200. In the long run, I'd save more money being able to make them.
Here are my questions: 1) Is it easier to get an FFL to manufacture a silencer or just purchase a pre-made silencer and get approval from ATF? (I don't want to waste $200) 2) If I have an FFL do I need to pay the $200 transfer fee for every silencer I make or just the one time app fee and renewal?

Hmmmm......let me add another question. Do you need an FFL to make one for yourself, or do you only need one to manufacture them for sale or transfer?

If im not mistaken you can fill out a form to manufacture a suppressor for personal collection that doesn't require an FFL. One of the NFA experts will chime in with the correct form I'm sure.

Try posting in the NFA forum... You might have better results there.

To manufacture and sell suppressors, you need an 07 (manufacturer's) FFL PLUS a Class 2 Special Occupational Tax which runs $500 or $1000 per year, depending on how many you make.
To make one for your own use and not for resale (and don't try to play games on that) you submit an application with fingerprints and $200. Once approved by BATFE, you can make one (1) suppressor for your own use. Each additional one will be another application and another $200. Jim

Goals
Are your goals to be a machinist who like to say they made something? Or are you a shooter who wants a top notch silencer?
If just want to be a shooter then buy a silencer. To build a silencer worth a crap, you will need a lathe, and lots of tooling. |

Thanks for the replies everyone. My goal is to make them for myself. I don't want any parts of selling firearms or the accessories that go with them.
I have access to a lathe and tools, but I'm also open to just buying a suppressor because I think I may only need 3 total in the foreseeable future.

Just understand that a form 1 registration is to make 1 silencer, not to prototype and re-design and improve or even repair said silencer. You would need a FFL gunsmith license to replace any parts in the silencer you built. How ever you built it that is how you have it, except you can send it to a gunsmith for repair or re-design of the core as time goes on.

You can also get your NFA items from NFA(New Frontier Armory)
. Sorry I couldn't help myself on that one. They're on the north end of town if you're not already familiar with them.

@Sigcurious, I actually found out about them a few days before you posted. They are right down the street from me and their ARs are nice. Thinking about getting one at tax time.
