REALLY rare pistol.....maybe

New here, and probably won't stay very long, because I'm honestly not much of a gun-guy. However, I think I may have accidentally purchaced a really rare piece.
It's a S&W 38 Special Colt L CTGS...that's right, there's an "S" behind CTG
The serial is 175
The makers marks and proof markings are very unique.
Here's the kicker: a friend of a friend has blindly offered me $10,000 for the weapon, but I still have no idea what is so special about it.
Anyone wanna help a non-gun-guy out here?

DO NOT invest that kind of money without knowing what you're doing. And trust me, you don't - you haven't included enough info for us to ID the gun type.

I don't know anything about the particular revolver but does it look like this one? I found a CTGS listed recently for $170

... He is not the one offering the money, someone is offering him $10k to buy the gun...

Bigsound, pictures would be a great help.

I do not really know what you are talking about, but sell if now. Sell, sell, sell, sell.

Is the friend of a friend in Nigeria? He probably needs you to front him some money before he can make the wire transfer...

Seriously, welcome to The Firing Line! Let us know a lot more about what you have and maybe someone can let you know a fair value. Remember that condition is very important when it comes to valuing old guns. $10,000 sight unseen? Somebody is made out of money, has lost his senses, or some combination of both.

$10,000 for a pistol, is it made of solid gold?

I believe that only the first couple of thousand of .38 M&P's in 1899 were chambered for the .38 Long Colt. The .38 S&W Special came out at that time and everything since has been chambered in .38 Special. I have no idea what one of the originals would be worth to a collector. Post some pics of it on the S&W Collectors Forum if you want a good estimate.
