Remington R-1...thoughts?

Looking for any insight on this 1911. Waiting on a Ruger SR1911, (back-ordered everywhere!) thinking of picking up the SR-1 while I wait.

There are better cast 1911s on the market IMHO. The Ruger is a better gun and IMHO so are the Filipino 1911s.

I like mine a lot. I did a trigger job on it and a Ruger both are great the Remington out shoots the Ruger but the Ruger is prettier. I would not hesitate on either.

My Remington is great

There may be better 1911's on the market, but I shoot my Remington better than anything else I have (Sigs, Glocks, EMP 9mm, S&W 1911ES, S&W revolvers, etc.)

I can get one ragged hole at 7 yard combat range.

Love this 1911

Trooper Joe

PS (I dressed it up a little to remind me of my old Remington I carried on shore patrol in the 60's/even though it was really a different gun.)

I wouldn't buy either gun, until they've been on the market a while, and even then, wouldn't buy them. Unless you're an "I've always wanted a 1911 built by (fill in name of random company)" buyer, I'd buy a gun from a company that's been building them for fifteen years, or thirty-five years, or 100 years, instead.
I've always wanted a bread toaster made by John Deere, but think I'll just go with a home appliance company, instead.

They are an okay gun. 10-8 performance has said they are a fairly decent lower end gun but a little rough and they prefer the SR1911 to the R1. If you can stand the finish quality of the Armscor/RIA guns, they will do anything the R1 can do, perhaps better, and for less money.

FWIW, despite the inuendo, I can't find any casting lines in/on my Remington R1 - and like it a LOT better than the loaded Springer Champion .45 that went before is, but not quite as much as I liked the Colt LWC .45 I had in the 80's.

While I've only put about 1500 rounds of hardball through mine, I've had zero issues/bobbles, and very decent accuracy.

I could have bought pretty much any 1911 I wanted, but the R1 rang my chimes enough to get into my wallet.

If I haven't learned enough over the years, I've at least learned I don't need much in the way of the bells/whistles the makers have been putting on some of their 1911 models these last several years. (Call it: K.I.S.S.)

Earlier this year I was contemplating buying a 1911. I've shot many 1911's, but never owned one. I did not want to spend more than $900, and I did not want a specialized match weapon, nor was this going to be a carry weapon. The R1 was one I was looking at, along with the Ruger and several of the springfield armory offerings.

At the Spring NRA event in St. Louis, I bought a $20 ticket for the "wall of guns", and golly gee... I won. After looking over the selection, I noticed they had a Rem R1, so I picked that... (I also picked out a lever action rifle for my wife, who has always wanted one). Thank You NRA, 2 firearms for the cost of a 20 dollar ticket!

I have a couple of hundred rounds through the R1 1911. It feeds Federal HST and Speer gold dots with no problem. All in all I would have to say the trigger is pretty nice. Just a trace of creep. The trigger is a little light for a combat trigger, but it is heavier than a match trigger. Of course I have been shooting Glocks my whole life, so this crisp SA trigger seems quite luxorious to me. Sights are good three dot, nothing fancy but very serviceable. Fit-n-finish is very good.

At the going street price, I would say the R1 is a good deal. Very competitive with the Ruger and Springfield... this is coming from a Ruger fan with 4 Ruger firearms that I love.

When they first hit the market the price was tempting. But now they've jacked the price up to the point that there are better for less.I've shot both Rem and RIA,but for the money i'd get another RIA tactical. If you're not going top end Kimber ,the RIA is a nice dependable pistol for a little over $400.

I think both the Remington R1 and the Ruger have been on the market for about three years now.

How many years does it take, before they are noteworthy?

It is not either or since I think both are good pistols. I just happen to like the Remington better, but I respect those who like the Ruger. It is nice to have a choice.

I'd suggest you save just a bit more and get the real original deal, a Colt.

Colt is making some beautiful pistols today, they hold their value very well, are made in the USA and have a lifetime warranty (if you should need it).

Best of luck with your search.

I wouldn't kick it out of bed for eating crackers, but I also wouldn't go out and purchase one unless it was a an absolute steal. My reasons:

--short trigger, I much prefer the look and feel of a long trigger
--spur hammer, gives a touch of hammer bite for some people, a LOT of it for others, (none for some, I'm sure)
--no beavertail safety add to the above condition
--SO MANY CHOICES in the market to be stuck with those items above
--I have a difficult time being impressed by Remington these days (mostly for reasons other than their actual firearms)

Sure, some traditionalists will spout that the 1911 got by just fine like that for many decades before "custom" started evolving the bits & parts of these pistols, but there are just too many other choices out there. I'd take an R1 if it were DIRT cheap but otherwise, I don't see me owning one.

Looks like the Ruger was introduced in the Spring of 2011, and the Remington, one year prior. The Ruger has been very hard to get since introduction, so I wonder how many there are in customer hands? I remember when they announced the LCP at 2008 SHOT Show, took something like a quarter million orders before a single gun had been made, then recalled them all within a year. You'd think Ruger could get a 1911 right from the get-go.

Got mine for $615 shipped from buds. The finish is above that of the RIA and on par with the Ruger.

Mine has had no malfunctions and I shoot it as well as I do my FIL Colt and S&W

I'll chime in with another resounding I Love Mine. I went out looking for a SA Milspec. I went to 4 different gun stores and no one had one. On my last stop I again was disappointed to find there was no SA. But I stumbled upon this gem which I hadn't even heard of beforehand. It was perfectly what I was looking for. It had all the classic GI look I loved but also with the exact (except for the sights) bells and whistles I wanted such as stainless bbl bushing and bbl, lowered ejection port, flared mag well, etc. Long story short, I accidently found the firearm I was looking for and didn't even know I was looking for it.

Hmm...that refrain was a little hard to follow. Then I remembered how I found my wife 43 years ago.
