Headed to New York this weekend
Headed up to New York this weekend for a wedding. Upstate, not NYC. I have an Ohio CHL permit, but this does me no good in either PA or NY so I can obviously not bring a pistol with me.
What can I bring for personal protection and keep on my person under the laws of these two states? I will be traveling through PA, but destination is in NY.

Try here under each state. Maybe they will elude to something.

I was thinking on at least bringing my S&W ExtremeOps folder, but I think it might be over legal length, weighing in at about 4 inches Not having a gun is not the worst thing in the world, but would like to have something

You seem to be sensible.
Stay out of bad places. Go to bed at a reasonable hour. Don't hang out with bad people. You'll be fine. Last edited by Woody55; August 15, 2012 at 12:56 PM. |

I agree with Don H,,,

It was the only weapon my Korean karate instructor would teach us young GI's. Google LAPD baton training,,, It translates very well to a normal cane length stick. Smack a man on his ankle,,, He will say ouch. Aarond .

Stressfire,
As a native New Yorker (Upstate), I have to say right off the bat - DO NOT bring any firearms into New York State. Only state residents may possess firearms within the state's boundaries (there is a small exception for visiting hunters, but that only allows them to borrow a gun from a friend who is a NY resident for the duration of the hunt). OC/pepper spray is also heavily regulated, although I don't know the exact specifics so I'll just have to say be careful with regards to that. I'd be careful of any folder over 3" without knowing what the local regs are. Some areas will regulate more than others (especially the more populated upstate cities like Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, and Albany). I have to third Don H's and Aarond's suggestion about a cane/walking stick. With a little knowledge of how to use a baton, they can be a very effective defensive tool without raising any warning flags or getting you in legal trouble just for having one (and canes aren't illegal in NY - yet - Bloomberg hasn't decided wheelchairs are better for your health so far this week). |

You may not even possess a pistol in the state of New York without a New York state pistol permit, and they don't give them to out-of-state residents. I don't know about long guns.

Having lived in NY state much longer than I ever wished to, and being buried in the local and state regs more than I care to remember....
I determined that the only weapon I could legally carry anywhere I went was.... My truck keys. ![]() Oh... and "upstate" being something other than NYC is how people from NYC refer to the state. People from other parts of NY refer to the actual area of the state that they're talking about. NY isn't exactly a 'small' state, so it does help to know the general area more precisely than just 'not NYC'. ![]() The laws are still convoluted and repressive, but vary depending on the actual area in question.

And I am wary enough carting the 4"+ blades around my own state with only vague or nonexistent OC laws (or lack thereof) to hang my hat on.Quote:
But, yes, that is always my general modus operandiUnfortunately the only non-old man type folding blades (think grandpa's jackknife) I have that are under 3" are a hawkbill that is only effective if used as a karambit, but has design features that make it look more wicked than it actually is and a single-edged stilleto-style (not a switchblade, but thin-bladed), and a switchblade (most likely illegal to carry anyways) The cane is an idea...I have one that may suffice, but it might be difficult to claim it as a "needed" item being that I am not yet even 30 and able-bodied. I am just going to guess hear, but my ASP is probably out of the question

Definitely don't bring a switchblade into to NY - illegal by state law. Assisted-opening is OK, if a side folder, as far as I know - but I would always advise you to be more careful, not being a state resident. NY doesn't often play nice with outsiders. Out of curiosity, whereabouts are you going? It may help to know - I, or someone else, may be better able to help you with local laws. |

Will mostly be in the Utica/Rome area
Quote:
Like I said, not having a gun is not the worst thing in the world - but having nothing leaves one feeling a bit exposed. The cane/walking stick may be a winner with a short assisted opener on the belt- I doubt I will have any need to use either, but I may need to open boxes

It sounds like you've got things pretty well worked out then.
Utica/Rome area shouldn't be too bad, as far as I know - I'm from the Buffalo area, so maybe another member can help you out with area-specific advice where I can't. |

You should be okay this weekend. My daughter is getting married this Friday here in Virginia and half the guests are from New York. So I expect the risk leve will be way down.

As John Farnam says:
Don't go to stupid places with stupid people. Be in bed by 10:00 PM -- That's reasonable advice and you will survive Utica and Rome. Or go to risky place with stupid people at 3:00 AM and carry a gun! Sounds like fun instead of going to NY.
