S&W 586 Lock up issues

I took my S&W 586 357 mag to the range the other day. I fired off a couple rounds in single action as I usually enjoy touching off the slick single action trigger on this one! I cocked back the hammer and squeezed her off only to get a CLICK , so I keep the muzzle pointed down range for about 30 seconds. Thinking I just encountered a misfire from bad ammo. I swing the cylinder open. And I get a disturbing sight. My firing pin struck the rim of the casing about a 1/16 or so from the primer. I then unload the revolver ,close the cylinder and cock the hammer back to find out it's not locking up correctly.
I continued doing this a couple of times , I turned the cylinder manually (by hand) it locked into place. Once it's locked in place it will rotate when cocked and lock up correctly (sometimes ).So until i can get this problem resolved, i have a deep blued paper weight! This gun hasn't been sent in for the 586 Recall (cylinder binding/primer piercing ), Does this create/contribute to the problem above? I figured i would ask here before i send it back to S&W for the recall repair. If its a easy fix i may do it myself. If not ill see what S&W has to say about it . Any info is appreciated

If there is a recall on that gun, send it to S&W and they will also fix anything else that is wrong with it, likely at no cost. Don't even try to fix it yourself as that could void the warranty and create problems. Call them and they will send a pickup ticket so the shipping is on them.

Thats what i kinda thought.
Ill pay extra for the work on that issue.
I just dont want to over pay,
if i can do it or have my local smith do it cheaper.

The recall on the early 586 and 686 revolvers was issued because a very small number of them had bad hammer nose bushings which would allow the primer from fired rounds to extrude backward into the bushing and lock up the gun. Because the revolver was aimed at the LEO market at the time, Smith chose to recall all of them and replace the bushing rather than deal with the bad publicity.

The problem you describe is not related to the recall. It sounds to me like the cylinder stop is sticking in the down position and not locking the cylinder in place. This is usually caused by a weak or broken spring or just plain dirt. Another possibility is that the advancing hand is not carrying up the cylinder completely which usually means an oversized hand must be installed and fitted. At any rate, I would call Smith & Wesson and ask them if you're gun is part of the recall. They will need the serial number or possibly just the complete model number including the "dash" number ie: Model 586-2. All guns repaired by Smith & Wesson due to the recall have an "M" proof mark stamped in the frame's yoke cutout which is visible when the cylinder is open. If your gun should be part of the recall and was not previously repaired by Smith, they will send you a prepaid FedEx shipping label for return of the gun and will repair the hammer nose bushing free of charge. They will also completely inspect & repair anything else which needs attention at that time but you would be responsible for the cost of that work. If your gun is not part of the recall or was and was repaired previously by Smith & Wesson, try to ship it back thru a dealer because they can legally ship it vial US Postal Service priority mail which is about 25% the cost of the mandatory overnight shipping by FedEx or UPS.

Officially, and for obvious reasons, S&W will not repair at no cost anything not related to the recall. Unofficially, I have heard that they will fix small problems without charge.

I called S&W. My 586 is due the recall repairs.
The guy I talked to said SW is sending me a prepaid return package.
He said just note my problem in the comments and they will take care of it.
I'm not exactly sure if "we'll take care of it" means it's on us or not.
I'll just have to wait and see. I will post the out come.
