Shooting Underwater

I heard somewhere, maybe it was not serious/a joke, that a Glock could be fired underwater. Yes, I mean the entire gun 3 feet deep. Lets just assume the cartridge is sealed at primer and mouth and did not leak.

Is this true?

Bullet travel would be short?

Would the gun blow up?

Im sure lots of guns might be able to get a round off underwater, but what good is that?

I would think that the barrel being full of water would create a huge pressure problem. Somewhat like packing the barrel full of debris before firing. Water is much more dense than air.

Bad idea to shoot underwater if theres one air bubble it'll caue a pressure spike that could kaboom the weapon, same reason you make sure a barrel is clear of debris on land.

About any pistol would fire under water. Semi's would fire only once. The slide wouldn't move properly.

This is how we hunt sharks in the Rockies.

Not true...a recent episode of "Criminal Minds" showed Agent Hotchner fire at least three shots underwater at a kidnapper/killer in a submerged vehicle, and we all know, TV is an accurate portrayal of real life, right?

I've read of several military test specifications that required underwater operation, or maybe just post-underwater operation. Almost all of those were for long guns, but HK may have produced a semi-auto handgun that exceeded the requirement in at least one case/model.

You can also see the Russian pistol and rifle designed specifically for underwater use at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x-P578pnctU ; these both shoot "dart" ammunition (the pistol in 4.5x39R, the rifle in 5.66x40R) that the Russians call "strelovidnoy" ("nail") cartridges.
