I don't load .45 but I load SWC's in my .40. I have found that about 1/32 inch of the shoulder above the case equates to good feeding.

For everyday purposes, 1/32" (~) 0.030" ~ standard paperclip diameter.

Lol, If i ever brought my wife into reloading her ocd would maybe put out 2 cartridges an hour....... On a good day. On a bad day she'd probably spend 2 hours on 1 cartridge and then pull it and dump it after weighing/measuring it. "Oh no! the OAL is .001 short! this is no good! pull it and start over!"
