Minimum barrel length for pistols and deer

What do you suppose the reasoning is for a minimum barrel length of 5.5" on a pistol for deer in WI? The caliber only has to be above .22 rim fire (.22 center seems to be fine). Not that I would use it but it seems my 9mm with a 4.9" barrel would be a bit more of a killer than a 5.5" .22 center fire. Thoughts?

Who knows what politicians are thinkingwhen they pass such laws?

Sight radius and velocity would be the main advantages of the longer barrel, but I can push a 300 grain bullet from a 4 5/8 barreled SA Ruger faster than you're likely to get a 147 grain bullet from a 9mm, and likely more accurate.

No telling what the real reasons are. Best you can do is go by the stated rules. We as hunters don't make 'em, but we abide by them so that we stay legal.

Our state has a barrel length of 6".....I think it's to discourage people using 38 snubbies and smaller caliber concealed carry guns (9mm) that don't have the knockdown power or the sights hunting handguns have.

Ohio's handgun minimum bbl length is 5" , a straight walled cartridge with minimum caliber of .357.

Sight radius would be the only thing I could figure.

In OK. the minimum barrel length is 4" and 9mm not allowed and minimum cartridge length is at least 1 1/4, with .22 centerfire legal with at least a 55 grain soft point or HP bullet.

I want so bad to take a deer this year with a pistol (been trying for the last 7 years) but it has to be within 50 yards or closer for me. I always take a rifle in case the shot can't be within my pistol shooting abilities though. I normally carry my S&W model 57 in .41 Mag.
