i am trying to work up a light lead load base on 165 gr 309 g.c. lead load. i have loaded 180 hornady round nose with 34 gr 3031 but have nt shot it in yet. the whole purpose is to develop a light load in lead. the data i find is 23 gr. 4198 at 1739 vel. up to 27 gr 4198 at 1980. etc. any one have any sug.?thanks cjs

If you're going to run the bullets that slowly, you can get more mileage from a faster powder. You'll be tossing a lot of unused 4198 out of the barrel at those low pressures, and having to use more grains of it to get there. I would suggest about 21 to 25 grains of IMR 4759, the traditional rifle light load powder, would be a good place to start for accuracy because it fills the case better than similar charge weights of other powders.

If peak accuracy is not your main concern, you will find a slow shotgun powder like Longshot or Blue Dot has better economy and will get the same velocities with just 16 to 20 grains, give or take a grain. The peak pressures will be higher with the faster powders, but still nowhere near what the rifle will tolerate.

All the above assumes the 165 gr. gas checked cast bullet.

30-40 krag loads

thanks for the tip. i did load 25 gr 4759 and it is with the 165 gr h.p. g.c. lead bullet, i cast my own. the purpose of this is to reduce the recoil and make it pleasent to shoot. i did load 180 gr. btsp with 34 gr. 3031. iwill probably shoot them in off of the sled, at my age i dont need the kick. you have been a lot of help, thanks cjs
