Well, to be perfectly honest with you, I've carried in DC before...
Not my first choice, but I was carrying legally in Virginia and my friend decided that he wanted to go to the polo fields to exercise the dogs. It did help that he's US Park Police, but it still made me nervous.

i once saw a tv news demonstration using a smal, skiiny man dressed in loose fitting clothing like is popular today in some areas. lookin straight on he looked normal (if you call his manor of dress normal). he then started to pull out the guns he was carrying. i belive he had more than 20 guns on his person including a riot type shotgun. it was amazing the amount of guns he had concealed under his baggy type clothing. now the camera shot was frontal and he did not walk around as it probably have been a dead giveaway but still amazing.

Heh - some very interesting and very funny posts in this long thread.
For the record, one, with reload(s), and maybe a back-up in the vehicle. That is just my personal decision, and in no way reflects some received wisdom. Folks who carry one or more back-ups with them are fine by me.

how mny
The “Grandfather/Godfather” of defensive pistil craft, Col. Jeff Cooper stated many times. “The best self defense is to live in a good neighborhood, and stay out of bad ones.” Col. Cooper also stated, “if you are expecting a fight have a rifle or shotgun in your hand not a pistol in a holster.” Col. Cooper believed in this so strongly he never felt the need to carry more than one (1) pistol with several reloads for self-defense.
Please forgive me for the all inclusive and sweeping statements that follow. The armed citizen will NEVER be involved in a protracted gun battle; neither will 1 in 10,000 police officers. The above is based on my 27 years experience as working cop in a medium to large Western city with a history of a violent citizenry. As an armed citizen your first legal responsibility is to retreat to safety, if it is imposable to retreat you may use only the amount of force required to protect yourself or others. Remember if you blow up a group of thugs you may get a pass by the D.A. but you will NOT get a pass from the losers attorney. Just remember the “subway shooter” years ago. He was justified, criminally, in shooting the thugs but lost his A$$ in a civil lawsuit |

true story.....happened in buffalo ny about 35 years ago.
my father in law was an insurance salesman. one evening he met with a client that owned a small neighborhood bar to go over his insurance. during the meeting 2 young men entered the bar and proceeded to rob both the bar and the patrons. they were armed with a shotgun and a handgun and ordered everyone against the bar. they proceeded to rob the cash register and the owner and then 1 by 1 they robbed the partons. they took their cash, wallets, watches and jewlery. my father in law was licensed in ny to carry a concealed weapon, not an easy feat at the time if anyone knows about ny gun laws. at the time of the robbery he had a 5 shot snub nosed s&w 38 in his pocket. he knew that when they got to him they would find the gun and he was afraid they would use it on him. as they got close he drew his gun, the man with the shotgun fired at him. my father in law felt what he described as the heat and wind of the shotgun blast go by the right side of his face. he fired 2 shots with his 38 at the robber with the shotgun. the robber with the handgun started to run firing rounds blindly as he tried to leave. my father in law fired his last 3 shots at the robber and he fell outside the bar. no partons in the bar were injured. the police and ambulance were called. the robber with the shotgun was dead, the robber with the handgun was seriously injured. statements were taken by the police from my father in law and all the patrons. the police took my father in laws gun as evidence and he had to go to the police station but was not charged. the robber that lived was tried and convicted of armed robbery but his injuries were severe and he died less than a year later. before he died he tried to sue my father in law for his injuries but was unsuccessful. my father in law was a ww2 combat vet. he regretted having to shoot these 2 men until the day he died but but he said he probably saved his own life and probably others as well. he did have to face civil suites after the shooting but they were unsuccessful. i guess if my father in law had multiple guns it would have been an advantage but this was a real life experience and he did what he had to do with what he had available and thankfully it was enough. my father in law passed of natural causes last year. my wife now owns that little 5 shot s&w revolver.
