Why not just delete it?

Some threads that are locked due to multiple threads (that are locked instead of merged), or political threads ( http://www.thefiringline.com/forums/...d.php?t=369107 ), or other threads that violate the rules.

Why not just delete them? Are left up to serve as an example? What are the admin's thoughts on this?

If a thread is simply deleted, how is the originator of the thread or respondents to the thread going to know why it disappeared if they can't see the closing post?

Often when a thread is deleted, we get a public question of "why was my thread deleted?" or we get private emails or PM's asking the same thing. Closing an OT or duplicate thread with an explanatory post eliminates most of those unnecessary communications.

That's what I figured, but wanted to ask anyway in case there was reasoning beyond my thoughts. Thanks for your time.
