Have you looked at the Sniper Central entry level tactical rifle package?

How set are you on 308? Have you considered the CZ 550 Ultimate Hunting Rifle? If you buy the package with the rifle and the Nightforce scope for around $4000 USD, you get a 1 MoA at 1000 yards guarantee.

I'd looked at that, it sounds tempting, but I am wary of purchasing overseas purely for the paperwork nightmare of importing restricted items to Australia.
I think .300 Win Mag on the CZ is a bit too much recoil for me to be comfortable with.

Have you considered the Mosin-Nagant? I'm pretty sure I saw someone from Australia responding to some of the Mosin threads.

Is the 7.62x54R ammo available easily in Australia?

Mosin's are pretty cheap over here ($59 USD and up), and the surplus ammo is still kinda cheap too (around 20 cents per round or .20 USD at the cheapest).

$300 odd for the rifle
$350 for about 600 rounds of the old milsurp corrosive stuff.
I'm getting a Mosin just on the simple fact that its a Mosin and seeing that, along with a Lee-enfield at the range, has woken my Milsurp urge.

Hi Aussies. When you said $1500 for a Savage what model were you looking at ? Some of these prices seem a little high. Is that because of the exchange rate or do you have high taxes / registration fees on your guns ?
due to exchange rates we have inflated prices a ruger m77 in .270 is worth abut 1300$ depending where u get it from + i think there might be sum other taxe on it

thats why I thought the rifle built there, might be one of your best options, plus they are available in several "grades" up to match grade... I've been told the 20 round M-14 magazines fit the .308 rifles... & that really interests me, a modern mil style high capacity bolt action match rifle that uses common high cap magazines... don't get much better than that for me... I wish I could find a match rifle here... I'd buy one in a heart beat
