Price of Savage action vs full rifle

My local Wal-Mart has a Savage 10 in .243 with scope for $377. Blued action and barrel. Comes with Accutrigger and barrell that is easy to swap. Also has their ridiculous synthetic stock. You guys aren't kidding when you say you can bend it with your hand.

Seems to me that's a pretty good deal. Isn't just an action around $400?

I guess my next question is there much of a difference between the actions for 10, 12, 16, etc.

Final question. If I was wanting to put a .223 barrel on there, would that work? No problems with the bolt being too big?

Thanks!

Price of Savage action vs full rifle

I just went through this myself. The Savage action is going to run you between $400 to $500. Then the barrel at let's say $325 and then a stock adds another $150 to $350. I opted for the complete rifle( Savage 12FV @ $504). Down the road I may upgrade the stock and barrel. Out of the box accuracy is excellent thoigh.

My 'custom' Savage 30-06 priced out as follows:
Savage 12SS action, $374 NIP, shipped from Northland Shooter Supply which is accessible through savageshooters.com
McGowen SS Select Match barrel, $281 shipped from same
B&C Duramaxx, $120ish shipped from Midway.

That comes out to $775 for the whole rig.

You could probably get a used gun from the classified over at savageshooters.com and come out even better. Northlander also had some Stevens actions for $225, but there may not be any left at this point. You can definitely build a much better for not much more money than buying new if you talking about a mid to high end Savage.

You can't put a 223 barrel on a action with a 243 bolt face.

Midway USA has the Savage actions on close out sale. I would just buy a Factory rifle and upgrade the stock. A good option would be to buy an action and have it barreled by RE Shaw.

ER Shaw prices

$225 stainless crowned, threaded and chambered barrel
$105 fluting
$75 to install
$40 action trued
$55 lap lugs

Anyway you look at it, a custom bulit rifle is costly. ER Shaw has very good barrels that are better than factory. His prices are excellent for what you get.

shooter_john You did figure in the whole cost.

Did you have the following done which adds to the cost.

Barrel threaded, crowned and chambered
True the action
Lap the lugs
oversize recoil lug
install the barrel

Sure you can... you just have to buy a new bolt face. ($40-$50 IIRC) (and you'd probably need a new magazine box)

I have a Shaw 260 barrel that to date, SUCKS!!! I'd pay the extra $50 for a McGowen without even thinking about it.

None of the above was done, except installation of course. I did that part myself in the shop with a vise, action wrench, and Savage barrel nut wrench. Took roughly 10 minutes. And all that lapping the lugs requires is some lapping compound ($16 from Brownells) and a few minutes in front of the TV working the bolt. If I ever get that kind of spare time, I may look into it.

No, but for $40, you can swap out the bolt head.

I have two bolt heads, one for '06 case rims and one for magnum case rims. Takes all of 2 minutes to swap out (I also bought the extractor and ejector parts).

A better deal is to buy a complete Stevens Model 200 rifle. It is a Savage 10/110 (depending on cartridge length) with a matte finish. New, the street price is less than $300. I picked up a used one for much less. Also, Savages in pawn shops are typically a good buy. You can sell of the Stevens barrel and tupperware stock for around $75 to $90 for additional savings.

Without sights, I built my long range 300WM for $585.

Receiver & Bolt 135.00 Stevens 200, used, less sale of 30-06 bbl and tupperware stock
Stock 107.00 Bell & Carlson Duramaxx Tactical
Bolt Handle 25.00 Sharpshooter Supply Factory BT
Barrel 165.00 ER Shaw 3.5 contour 26" 300WM
Recoil lug 23.00 Tubb
Bolt Head Parts (Belted Magnum) 39.00 Savage factory
Target trigger 71.00 Timney
Steel trigger guard 20.00 Savage factory

I lapped the barrel, installed it, and parkerized the rig. You don't need to lap lugs on a floating bolt head. You can, but you are past the point of diminishing returns. You can also save money with a Savage factory 3-screw trigger.

This rifle shoots just under 6 inches at 600 yards, which is the longest range I have access to.

Good call!!! I forgot to mention that. I read fairly recently that the Savage 7mm-08 sporter barrels were the most sought after on the take-off market. But if you're looking to build a 223, I'd just get a Stevens .223. Take-off barrels usually go for $20-$75 it seems. Find a steal on a Stevens rifle, and sell the barrel... You're talking $200 for your action.

You got a McGowen SS Select Match barrel that was threaded, crowned and chambered for $281 shipped?
