'Cause I would sure hate to waste your time with a really insignificant question prefaced with a needlessly long introduction.
But, is there any reason why the rifle forum is lumped in with the hunting forum, instead of in Hogan's Alley? And who's this Hogan person? And what the hell is a "skunkwork"? I'll stop now. -boing |

I think "skunkworks" refers to inventing, modifying, experimenting and general tweaking. The Lockheed division near Palmdale was called the Skunkworks, where they developed all sorts on neat stuff, including Chuck Yeager's toys

Hogan's Alley is a general training term used to describe a scenario where you are defending yourself against popup bad guys.
As the distances are short, preferred weapons are handguns, shotguns, carbines and subguns. The rifle deserves a place of it's own as the highest form of the Art of shooting can only be found in the Sniper's Hide. Is there overlap between Hogan and the Hide? Yup. Rich |

DC is right about Lockeed being the source of term, "Skunkworks." It originated with a comic strip (too young to know which one) and started as "Skonkworks". Somehow, the term evolved at Lockeed into its current version and a cartoon skunk was eventually adopted as an emblem.

4V50Gary: "Skonkworks" originated in Al Capp's Lil Abner. It was the sewage treatment plant...

Shucks. Lil 'Abner was still around when I was a kid. Guess it pays to know how to read. Thanks.
