Found a S&W .38 I forgot about-need info please?

In moving I found this gun that I forgot I had (wife found it.) It is a S&W that I think is a M10. The serial # is V167317 and has U.S.Navy stamped on the topstrap. Made in U.S.A. is stamped on the right side. Under the barrel is the number 8741 on the left side under the crane. This gun is in said shape but I was curious if anyone knows anything about its history.

Thanks in advance.

V prefix means victory model. WW2 S&W production revolver for military use. Usually rought finish and parkerised. Some early ones might be blued. It is a four inch M&P(pre model 10 type) and they used to sell cheap. Now a really nice one brings alot more money than I would pay for one. I once got one for 75$ but now they might be 4-500 for a really nice one. If you are willing to pay what they are asking. U.S. Navy markings not seen as often, I don't think. Some Navy ones were used by pilots in shoulder holsters during the war. Some were in 38 S&W caliber for the British. Lot of them ended up back in the US with ugly black paint over the worn out finish. I have one and it is a basket case, I think. If it were refinished it would still be a very worn loose gun. And in an unpopular caliber. I should at least remove the paint someday and see what the markings are for British service besides the US markings. then toss it in the river.
