Hornady SST bullets?

Anybody have any experience with the Hornady SST bullets? I want to use the 129 gr. in my 6.5 x 55 Swede. For powders I was going to try H4350 and IMR 4350, maybe RL 15 and RL 19.

I have used these in 7 mag, 30-06 and 300WM. I have had great results in all the calipers. Not shot any over 150gr as of yet. Did shoot a Moose at 425 yards with 300WM with the 150gr SST. It preformed great, went throught, broke both shoulders and lodged under the skin so I recovered it. It retained about 90% . They are very accurate along with being very deadly, try them you will not be disapointed.

I worked up a load with the 150SST in my 30-06 that was very accurate. Tried them out on a 7 pt whitetail and the bullet did a great job pulping the lungs and completely passed throught the buck even as the velocity was very high.(20 yard shot).

I've gotten very good accuracy with them in my 300WSM BAR and 308 BAR and Savage. Only dumped one deer so far with them and was satisfied. Some have reported that they blow up.

Best accuracy of anything using a 139g in my 7mm-08. Haven't had a chance to test it on fur yet though.

I use the 165gr SST in the '06 and have killed a few elk and deer with them. At closer range they do blow up some, the ones I've recovered had about the same retained weight as a partition. They do cause more shock IMO and put them down fast if you place them right. I'm happy with them, and they shoot very well in my '06es.

Thanks for the feedback. I had not read too much about them, but was impressed with the high BC. I'll feel more comfortable now not just popping coyotes, but trying it on deer this fall.

VaFisher- 90% weight retention, wow!!! Are you sure it wasn't the Hornady Interbond. In my experience the SST's have been accurate, but on game they act more like a Ballistic Tip. I agree though that the SST is a great choice for deer. Brett

To be fair about the 90% it was a guess and not weighed on a scale. It could have been 80% to be totally fair, i was going by looks only. It did one heck of a job on that moose though and I was impressed as I wasn't sure how well 150gr SST would do on a moose. I have shot several deer with the same combination with great results, never had any blow up like I have heard.

Can't go wrong

I load SST'S with my 7mag, 7-08, 270, 308, and 300 all at or close to max powder charges. On the bench 1 inch or less groups and on game animals very efficent clean kills. I also use the A-MAX bullets in my 6mm and 223 calibers too.

I load the 30 cal 165gr SST infront of 42gr of IMR 4895. MV 2650fps and it shoots .5MOA in my 700 PSS. It is devastating on white tail. Over the last two years I've shot seven at ranges from 30yd to 250yd. One of them almost made it 20 feet . All of them have gone clear through so watch your back ground. These are also great for punching paper.

5 shots 100yds 5mph cross wind

I have not tried the 165 gr yet but may after your post. I have thought about them before but never got past the 150 gr.

Hey BTP, thats a fabulous group! I just received the new scope for my 6.5 x 55, and need to mount that then get to the range with some SST reloads and see how they like each other.

I was working up a load for my BAR 300WSM lightweight stalker. The group on the right is 4 shots @100 yds from a bench. I went one click left to see if I could get right on the line, that's the two shots on the left.

I use the 129 gn Hornady SST in my little 6.5 Swed carbine. I have had decent sucess using H-414 and IMR 4895. I have taken a couple of deer and hogs with this bullet. Always results in a clean kill.

Right on, I love these bullets. I hope to get a 700 in 260 soon, with the BC on the 6.5 mm bullets you can bet these will be my first purchase!!
