Looking for .44 Magnum Predictions.
I'm about to drop 8.0 grains of Universal into a .44 Remington Magnum case and top it off with a taper crimp 240 grain cast SWC. Win LP primer, C.O.L. 1.620". Hodgdon Manual #27. Pg.123. A batch of 100 should do it.
Do I hear any Performance predictions? I don't have a chronograph. I'll use 20 year old gun show special bullets. It has been almost as many years since I've loaded .44 mag and I have plenty of Universal. In the Hodgdon Manual you can see how much more efficient H110 & W296 are vs. the faster powders. But since I don't want all that velocity I'm going to try something a little different. I think I'll get ~1000fps & accurracy should be good. I can't reproduce any of the bullets so this batch is to mainly try p.s.i. & buring charataristics & subjective handling. |

Universal, Universal Clays, not Clays
I would think Universal Clays, or Universal ( not Clays)would be similar to Unique? My guess is that 8 grains in a 6 inch revolver with a good fit cast bullet might get you 1000fps and should shoot accurate. It would make a nice mild load.

44 Mag. Predictions.
I think it will be more in the area of 900 fps, I load 8.5 gr of Unique with a 240 gr. cast bullet and am stretching it to get 1000 fps. Universal is just a tiny smidgen less powerful I think.

Per Hornady manual 7.5 gr of Clays Universal will produce 1000 fps and is listed at max load out of a 7 1/2" barrel.
A little shorter barrel I would think should drop it under 1000 fps and keep that lead out of the barrel. |
