Note sure if this is the "best" but I have been using 1.245" for the 200g H&G 68 SWC about the last 10+ years.

Don't know that I've ever measured the AOL--I leave about 1/32" (0.03") of the bullet shoulder outside the case. Much less and I have feeding problems with some .45s. On the other hand, my GOLD CUP feeds empty cases.

For any overall length, make sure the bullet is seated deep enough to chamber. (I have a couple hundred round of 45 that will function in one of my pistols, but not another...)
Next, round must be short enough to fit and move in magazine. But should be long enough not to allow too much fore and aft movement in the magazine under recoil. It will vary from bullet to bullet, and as I imply above, from gun to gun at times. ------------------ Archie |

Assuming you refer to H & G 200 grain swc, 1.260 oal worked fine in 2 government models that I have used.
