Shake Flashlight. Anybody have one they recommend.
Guys,
I think one of those "shake" flashlights I see on TV might be great for SHTF/general emergency/hiking. I understand they aren't super-bright. Has anybody had good luck with them?

Make sure you get what you think you are getting. MANY of them have a small battery and become useless with only a little use. They have no charging system and are fakes. Not all but some.

Yes Beware the fakes! Make sure that it charges a capacitor, instead of a battery. If they have batteries involved in anyway you can bet it won't be useful after sitting in a drawer or box for several years. The capacitor has no chemicals to break down, and can be recharged millions of times, if not indefinately.

Don't buy the $14 ones that we sell at Wal-Mart. They are fakes.
We even tell the customers that they are.

Not bright and the light doesn't last very long for the amount of shaking.

Bought a two-pack at costco for $20. They have LED and are very bright but distance is limited to about 30' outside. Great for inside illumination. They have a crank that you windup for 1 minute and the charge lasts 45 minutes. I don't recall the brand. If they ever fail, Costco will always take them back.

They are primarily intended to help you find your way to your other lights, and equipment. Not as a stand alone instrument.

Bravo25, they don't even do that well. I have an LED one from E.Bauer that I bought for my young nephew (who loves flashlights), and it isn't worth the trouble to shake up. Definitely go with the cranked model if you want something you can use in a realworld situation.
