How to evaluate a used shotgun

Can anyone tell me how to evaluate a used shotgun? Please keep in mind that I have little to no experience with shotguns so I may not understand all of the terminology. If someone could describe to me how and what to look for I would greatly appreciate it.

What type of shotgun? Autoloader,pump,single shot,break open. Differant evaluations for differant types of shotguns.

Okay,

After some exhaustive searches with varying terms, I finally found exactly what I was looking for and I knew all along that Dave McC would be the one that would have the answer!
