.357 Hunting Loads

Hello, folks.

What are people's recommendations for a .357 magnum hunting load? I'll be using a 5" barrel from a custom 686, and the terrain will be fairly thick so the shot will be within 20 yards.

I like a Keith 173 gr solid or 168 gr hp over a good charge of #2400. The powder wieght tailored to the indiviual pistol.

I use actual, authentic Ideal (now Lyman) moulds so that I know I am getting the real Keith design, as I think it's the best available.

Hope this helps.

I use the 173 grain Keith bullet dropped from a four cavity Lyman mould. Powder is 15 grains of 2400.

Great minds think alike.
You know the rest. In the books you have read
How the British Regulars fired and fled,
How the farmers gave them ball for ball,
From behind each fence and farmyard wall,
Chasing the redcoats down the lane,
Then crossing the fields to emerge again
Under the trees at the turn of the road,
And only pausing to fire and load.

I hunt the same type of terrain but could take shots up to 40 yards (my limit with my 586). I have used two different loads. One being a 158 grain gold dot hollow point over max for my gun charges of 2400 or H110. The other load that I am using now, thanks to WESHOOT is the Hornady 180 grain XTP-JHP over max charge of H110. Both shoot well and are more than enough for the typical deer that I see. I also carry a 20 gauge with slugs for the 200+ pound monsters that show themselves every once in a while.

I use the NEI 146 bullet over 15 grains of H-110.

This group, which measured somewhere around 0.710-inches for 6-shots at 75-yards.
It was fired using a Ruger Blackhawk in .357 Magnum with open sights
Case: Remington
Primer: CCI-550
Powder: 14.5 grains of 2400
Bullet: Sierra 158 grain Jacketed Hollow Cavity
Velocity 15' from muzzle: 1,222 fps

Works great on deer-sized animals out to 75 yards.

one small thought

If it fits your cylinder, try the R-P 180g SJHP.

Vihta 3N37. NON-Magnum primer. Heavy crimp using REDDING Profile Crimp die.

Or not.
