P226 Trigger failed to reset

I've got a brand new SIG P226 Elite that I've only had at the range twice now. On Saturday, while firing 124 gr Federal HST HP's, the trigger failed to reset at all. It was the first round of the magazine loaded with only 10 rounds and I fired it DA. I released the trigger slowly expecting the wonderful click of the SIG trigger and ... nothing. I released the trigger all the way and still nothing. Everything else had functioned normally. Round had ejected, new round loaded, hammer back. Just nothing would happen when pulling the trigger. I decocked, fired again and the rest of the session when flawlessly.

What's going on here? Anything I need to be worried about? ( I kinda am) Should I just fire some more to see if it does it again or go ahead and contact SIG?

I'll need to take it apart myself, but I'll do my best to help you through here.

Take off the grips and take a picture of both the right and left side of the gun with good lighting.

Is the trigger actually going back forward and just not resetting the sear, or is there no pressure pushing the trigger forward?

If the trigger is just not being pushed forward, it sounds like the trigger return spring either came off of it's notch in the trigger bar, or possibly broke. Being so new, Breakage sounds unlikely.

Take off the right grip panel to get access to the trigger bar and spring. It should look like this, and the tip of the spring should be in the little notch at the rear of the trigger bar as shown.

But didn't he say the gun returned to normal functioning after that first failure to reset?
Wouldn't that mean that the trigger spring is ok and still where it should be?

The trigger would go all the way forward on its own it just would not fire when pulled back. It felt like it was in single action but instead of reaching the point where you would feel resistance then it would fire, it would instead just go all the way back. Release it and it would go forward.

Yes, it only happened that one time and was fine the rest of the session.

I've taken some pictures with the grips off and to me everything looks like it's in the right place. But then again, I know nothing of SIG's.

Yeah, it looks perfect. Nothing wrong with it at all from the pics and what I can see.

Don't know what would cause that to happen just once. And you're sure it happened too..I guess I'd give SIG a call to ask. They've seen it all.

Haha, yeah I'm sure. I stood there for a second staring at it not really understanding what was going on. I'd fired a shot, the hammer was back, I pulled the trigger all the way back a few times and nothing. Hammer would spring back to the front and easily go all the way to the rear with little resistance.

Thanks, Constantine. After my next range visit I'll give them a call whether it happens again or not. Just curious if it'll do it again.

Yeah, that's very strange. Everything looks perfect. I'd run several hundred rounds through it and dry fire the crap out of it. you should do that anyways to smooth out and break in the trigger. Sig triggers are amazing after thousands of pulls. I usually put a snap cap in or a bunched up paper towel pad in front of the hammer and dry fire several thousand times before I hit the range for the first time with any new Sig.

Anyways, hopefully you're all set. It's hard to say what might have happened.

Any chance the slide hadn't fully returned to battery? Or, if the slide was in battery, could there have been anything interfering with the disconnector? A transient bit of junk could have caused the symptoms described, then fallen away as you dealt with your "what-the..." moment. Had that been the case, your gun functioned as designed. You may have stumbled on a major argument against carrying spare mags unprotected in your pocket.

Excellent point! I don't know why I didn't think about that... but yes, it's possible that there was a jam or some other slight failure to go into battery that was unnoticed.

If you pull the slide back just a little, you'll notice the symptoms that you describe with the trigger pulling back, but not catching the sear/hammer.

I'm betting it was something like the round was in front of the extractor so the slide was held back just enough to keep it out of battery until you messed with it.

Yeah, I should have thought of that too. Maybe the round didn't sit in the chamber properly and it was out of battery slightly. I dropped the ball on that. Sorry. Good call Chuck!

Mmm.. Siggies.

I haven't posted a review of this one just yet. Got all my stuff from Top Gun Supply yesterday to get it squared away - SRT kit, solid trigger, 19lb hammer spring, Mecgar 18rd and 20rd mags.

Gonna put a few hundred rounds through it before I write up a review... of course, the gun is perfection.... now it is, anyways.

I bought a brand new P226 MK25 this past week. I went to the range today. Within the first box of 50 rounds, the trigger stopped resetting.

Thanks to the picture above, I was able to put the spring back where it belongs. Dry firing in the house, it now seems to work.

How can I ever trust this gun?

Do I need to replace the spring or would it have come from the factory not placed properly?
