Molon Lave (poster)

Hi-res

Phrasing suggestions appreciated: I am trying to explain that the antis who expect to disarm America are abusing a poor grade of opium. Any better way to contrast 300 to 80 million?

Update: I re-edited the text based on feedback and went with conservative estimate of the Persian numbers. I am not going to worry about the 5 thousant or so Greek allies as they don't figure in the legends

Hey, I've got that hat!

Reminds me of Humpty Dumpty. "All the king's horses and all the king's men..."

Love it, Oleg!

maybe something like:

"Xerxes' (insert size of army here) failed to disarm 300 Spartans at Thermoplyae.
Whose army is big enough to disarm America's 80,000,000 lawful gun owners?"

But unfortunatly, I don't think that the majority of the 80M would resist harder than the 300 spartans.

On a side note - can you imagine Spartans equiped with rifles?

You'd be surprised. Americans are fond of private property. Even if some won't fight actively, I expect that they would not cooperate in turning in their guns...or any other property. Mine, I tell you, they are mine!

On the plus side, thanks to better technology and great ingenuity of our kind, one of us at the right place and at the right time could mean a dozen funerals for them...if there be enough left of them to bother with. Near as I can tell, the other side has gone through less than 20% of the severity possible in gun control efforts, and already they are beginning to compress that nice, resilient steel spring to the point where it would push the drum magazine follower reliably...and I wouldn't want to be them when the backlash happens.

Re-phrasing suggested by a friend: "Lawful American gun owners". Y/N?

Also, how many Persian troops were involved?

1 -- I think "lawful Americans" rolls off the tongue better.

2 -- though if it comes to that, I doubt we'd be all that lawful. "principled" perhaps, "ethical" certainly. "lawful" depends on the good will of the ones making the laws. But that's a nit that really doesn't need to get picked on your image. just rambing this afternoon, pardon.

3 -- just curious -- is it just me, or did you punch up the size of the poodleshooter bore a tad? What, all of a sudden .223 ain't intimidating enough?

4 -- LOVE the composition.. it'd be nice to see some color -- Runt's hat (cool as it is) fades into the background a bit. Of course, color looks like it'd be easy to overdo on this one.

5 -- Perhaps a screened-in version of the Battle of thermople in th background, lower right corner. (as in, Runt's looking out away from the battlefield behind her)

"Also, how many Persian troops were involved?"

Xerxes had an army of around 150,000 and a navy of over 600 ships. The Spartan/Athenian army was over 10,000. Don't forget that Xerxes did eventually "go and get them", but at a far greater loss than the Spartan's loss of the 300 who were left behind in a suicide plan to give the Athenians time to regroup. The Spartans had the big advantage of defending a mountain pass, but the Persians sneaked up behind them and that was the end of the battle.

*pulls out a copy of Gates of Fire from the local library*

Acording to Herodotus, Xerxes' army numbered 2 million men. And th Spartans killed ~20,000 of them before being destroyed.

Mr. Wolf, the ancients say 1 million (including Greeks that went over to the Persians, the "Medized Greeks") with over 80K horse which is fanciful to say the least. 250K to 400K is the more reasonable guess, IMHO.

Assuming arguendo the lower numbers the Persian Empire still outnumbered the allied city-states six or seven to one. Platea doomed the Persian invasion as Mardonius sprang his assault too quickly by not allowing the rest of his army to cross the Asophus and charged the Greek right (the Spartans) assuming that his cav would crush mere infantry. Oops, he ran right into Rooster!

The Spartans routed the Persian left. The Greeks in Persian service (concentrated on the Persian right) lost heart upon hearing the collapse of the other wing and melted away. The Athenians swung right to join the Spartans who were rushing the Persian camp across the Asophus river.

But they weren't all at Thermopylae, they wouldn't fit!

Nice work Oleg! Good job. I love it. One minor point- the Greek spelling of Molon Labe in the background is wrong- the second o should be an omega not an omicron.
