They may not admit it, but several celebrities are hunters

They may not admit it, but several celebrities are hunters

By Michael Pearce
The Wichita Eagle

In these days of frequent anti-hunting and anti-gun tirades by some celebrities, it's surprising when someone of prominence steps forward and admits a love for one or both. In these days of frequent anti-hunting and anti-gun tirades by some celebrities, it's surprising when someone of prominence steps forward and admits a love for one or both.

Recently, one of the world's best-known entertainers did just that.

Most people were surprised.

Madonna said she and husband Guy Ritchie often hunt pheasants on their rural English estate.

"I eat birds. You have more respect for things you eat when you go through, or see, the process of killing them," Madonna told BBC Radio One.

"I wear leather shoes. I eat fish, I eat chicken and I eat game. I like knowing what I'm eating and knowing the process."

Madonna also said she goes afield for more reasons than just food.

"When you're shooting, you are standing in the forest for really long periods of time, so you end up looking at the leaves and the sky and the trees and you have a lot of time to meditate," she said.

Jocelyn Stott, managing editor of Gun Games Magazine, said there are quite a few well-known celebrities who at least enjoy target shooting.

The problem is getting them to admit it.

"A lot of celebrities are afraid to come out and say they like to shoot or to hunt because they're afraid of repercussions," said Stott, whose target shooting magazine often features celebrities.

Possible "repercussions" could include being blacklisted by directors or other industry leaders opposed to the sports.

Some fear a negative reaction from the general public, she said.

"When we wanted to put Reba (McEntire) on the cover, she had no problems with it," Stott said. "But her agents and people in New York and LA were afraid people would misunderstand it because it was about the time of Columbine."

Director Steven Spielberg owns an extensive collection of fine shotguns and enjoys shooting clay targets, Stott said. She said Harrison Ford also enjoys shotgunning.

Actor Rick Schroeder is an avid hunter and target shooter who's spoken eloquently on both to the media.

Tom Selleck is well known for his love of shooting and many types of hunting.

While many professional athletes are sportsmen, several truly big sportsmen are even more dedicated than most.

Legendary NBA star Kareem Abdul-Jabbar enjoys shooting, including cowboy-action events.

Utah Jazz great Karl Malone is a rabid target shooter and accomplished hunter.

Politically speaking, most folks know that President Bush is an avid target shooter and hunter.

Despite recent concerns for his safety, Vice President Cheney still made a South Dakota pheasant hunt with friends several weeks ago.

Had it not been for a rather busy time at his office in Washington, Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld was scheduled for a New Mexico elk hunt with several buddies.

Famous celebrities with a Kansas twist include billionaire Ted Turner and former President Carter.

The avid quail hunters were in Kansas several days last year to bird hunt Turner's Z Bar Ranch in Barber County.

Actors Robert Stack and Leslie Easterbrook (Lt. Callahan in Police Academy) are avid shotgunners.

CNN anchor Lynne Russell has a CCW permit.

The Mandrell Sisters are shooters; Irlene is spokesperson for the Glock Shooting Sports Foundation.

I'm sure there are more.

Lynne Russell is a volunteer deputy for the Fulton County Sheriff's Department. She is also a licensed private investigator and bodyguard, working part-time for the United Security Group (unpaid, so as not to be a conflict of interest with CNN).

She has studied martial arts for about 20 years, shotokan and choi kwang do, holding, if I am not mistaken, a second degree black belt.

She plays hockey, and is a certified open water SCUBA diver.

To quote a brother of mine:

Daaaaaa-amn, that's a lady!

Boy, How We Miss Them-

The late Dale Earnhart Sr. was quite an avid
deer hunter; often times hunting these old'
Alabama woods with the late Neil Bonnett.

Somewhere on TFL there was a thread about Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of the rock band Aerosmith buying lots of guns at a gunshow (in Arizona I believe). Seems they're highly interested in full auto weapons.

In Ted Nugent's book "God,Guns, and RocknRoll"
He says that Joe Perry is a good friend with whom he shoots and hunts with regularly. He also stated that Steven Tyler also shoots occasionally and that Joe and/or Steve own a couple of NFA machineguns in their homestate of New Hampshire.

In one chapter of Ted Nugent's book "God, Guns & Rock and Roll" he talks about Steven Tyler & Joe Perry target shooting with him, Perry went hunting too.

Hmm, these celebs may own guns (e.g., Lynn Russell) but that doesn't mean that they're pro-rights. In the case of Ms. Russell, I have my doubts that she would like for the rest of us to own one (no particular basis for those doubts, just a bad vibe).

OTOH, anyone who owns an NFA gun is probably on our side.

Personally, I'd rather hear a celebrity say that he/she doesn't hunt, doesn't shoot trap, skeet or sporting clays, doesn't do celebrity shoots, but keeps an AK in the house and thinks everyone should.

Yes, ATeaM, I forgot completely about the rap stars. Who can forget the whimsical shooting sprees of Tupac Shakur and Notorious B.I.G. Those guys really knew how to pop some caps.

There's an image that won't leave my head all day today. Where's his holster ride, next to his knees?!?

Stand up comedian and actor, Sinbad, is also in SASS. After watching some of his standup routines it's kinda hard to picture him in old west gear.

Rick Nielsen from Cheap Trick
Jerry Mathers aka "The Beav"
Ice-T has a substantial weapons collection.

There are a bunch of Celeb shooters, the problem is that most don't speak out on behalf of the "common" people.

Wait a second . . . Steven Spielberg . . . THE Steven Spielberg? The one who is re-releasing ET with all the guns removed from it? THAT Steven Spielberg?

I'm confused.

And let's not forget actor Robert Blake (Barretta). Though I doubt he would be too willing to talk about it publicly.

Gale McMillian sold some very nice rifles to James Earl Jones.

And Joe Mategna, anybody who is the voice of Fat Tony on the Simpsons must be cool.

Steven Seagal is reputed to be an expert shot with his customized .45 Colt. Paul Sorvino always takes part in NRA celebrity shoots. So does the guy who played Major Dad. What's his name?

Lee Purcell & Gerald McRaney
If they make an instructional video They must be pro RKBA

link to video

A Woman's Guide to Firearms - starring Lee Purcell and hosted by Gerald McRaney, is a high quality instruction video that we recommend to anyone who would like to learn the fundamentals of firearms and shooting, VHS, approx. 60 minutes.
