Took my KY CCDW class today

I've never felt the need to pursue it until recently. Moving to a new area of the state, quite a bit more urban, and think I'll exercise my rights till I get more comfortable with the new surroundings.

Interesting at points. Down right boring at others. Did walk away with a new understanding of some of the laws of the state regarding deadly weapons.

Always a good day when I get to shoot. Even though it did cost $75 today

Thanks, don't have them yet. Just a matter of time.... and money. Get settled in the new county and go visit the sheriff. Hey, just moved in, oh by the way, I'd like to carry around a firearm in your fine county.

Yup, took mine last year. Lots and LOTS of video about laws, and that's one reason why the KY permit is reciprocal with so many other states.

It really does pay to keep up on CC laws, not just KY. Study up on IN, TN and OH while you're at it, it's a real eye opener.

Oh and feel free to open carry every so often.

Congrats. I agree the class was dry in spots, but overall I was pretty happy with it.

KySilverado:

Congrats! The next test will be of your patience while you wait for the permit application to be processed. But it's well worth the wait (and KY is a firearms-friendly State so it should be quick) and the $75 is a good investment.

Keep us posted about your CCW permit developments and, more importantly, when you are ready to wander around Wal-Mart for an afternoon.

Congrats and welcome to the club. I keep a low profile about it but the topic came up somehow and I just found out 3 of my neighbors are also CCW, somehow I feel even safer living here now.

Better read up on the Wally Walk. I think it is a requirement now.

Here it is...

Wally Walk
So you got your CHL.

We assumed that you have already chose a proper holster, mag pouch (or suitable combination of substitutes) and cover garment and played dress-up in front of a mirror a couple of hundred times. But now, it is time to go live in the real world. It is time for you to go to WalMart!

1) You must park your vehicle at least 50 yards from the entrance of a regular WallyWorld (75 yards for a SuperCenter.) As you head for the entrance, you must perform a scan of the area including checking under parked vehicles for BG's (Bad Guys.) Remember, grandma in an electric wheelchair is not a drive-by threat.

1A). Upon exiting car, Surreptitiously adjust sidearm. Now don't touch it again unless your pants are about to fall off. Then tighten your belt

2) You MUST drive the shopping cart. No substitutes are allowed. Negotiating aisles full of screaming kids dropping cans of Chef Boyardee while Mom is on the cell phone and trying the latest Rosie O'Donnell Makeup & Fragrances is a good test of patience and self-control.

3) No quickies! Your stay at WallyWorld must last no less than 45 minutes. You can hang out in automotive and even double check the Rapala lures to see what's new to kill an allotted rest time of 10 minutes. The rest of the time you must be on the move. An exception is made if you are with your significant other and she goes for the White Sale madness. You must park, wait and be ready to back your mate if things get hairy with the pillow throws or allergenic bedspreads.

4) You are gonna buy stuff so pick items from the top and bottom shelves to test your cover garment. Your mate can assist you and point out any deficiencies. If you are alone and store security or the cops have not arrived by the time you check out, you passed this test.

5) Check out: make sure you choose the busiest register. People will stand in close proximity and you must bear it with patience and avoiding contact. Beware of the people suddenly remembering a forgotten item and sending their mates to fetch it. They usually will brush against you on the way to get it.

6) Meal Time! If your WallyWorld serves Nachos, go ahead and get yourself a big serving of the suckers and wash it down with a Sam's cola. If McDonalds is the choice at the premises, get fries, onion rings, apple pie and a large Coke. ALL MEALS MUST BE CONSUMED ON SITE! No To-Go's or you will be disqualified.

7) When you leave, repeat the scanning of the parking lot. Remember that now you are also dealing with a shopping cart that rattles like and old train and wants to go right all the time. Do not lose track of your surroundings because of this. If you have a car, open the trunk and introduce all your bags while facing outwards. Pick up Trucks: lower the tailgate and do the same. Keep scanning, you never know where the BG's might be.

REMEMBER: Yellow lights = WallyWorld Security
. Red Lights = Cops.

9) - Make test fall on floor in busiest area - near register or anywhere crowded. See if concealment can still be maintained. If you lose that then go back to GO and do NOT collect $200

10) Restroom break (even if you don't have to go), go through the motions, figure out what your going to do with your gun, while sitting on the commode

Congratulations, but you're not done yet. That handbook you got with all of the laws in it? The more familiar with it you are, the better. Fortunately the Kentucky Revised Statutes are written fairly clearly.

Thanks for the complete test. Guess it IS the right of passage now. For what its worth, no I haven't strapped anything on and checked it out in the mirror. I have thought about it though

Good question. I guess its all in where you live. I've never felt the NEED to carry. Big city vs. hick town KY (no offense fellow KYians). Plus KY is gun friendly, even without a permit its perfectly legal to carry one in the glove box. Probably the same everywhere but there are areas you just avoid. Once I know those areas I don't see the need to carry on my person. I'll just leave it in the glove box. I've visited several cities that I wish I was armed so know where you are coming from.

I've done some study. Even before taking the class and will continue to do so. CCDW is an extreme responsibility. I hope I never pull my weapon. If I do I think it will be my basic survival instincts kicking in. I sure hope I'm not running statutes through my head when and if it comes to it.

Yeah, we all go through that phase of carrying 'sometimes', until we start reading about SD situations in perfectly 'safe' areas you'd never suspect anything bad could happen.

Picked them up today. I'm legal. The license was actually issued 11/28 but I've been away from town with work.

Strapped on the NightGuard and went shopping. A few gun shops picking up reloading supplies, stopped in Wal-Mart (of course ) and picked up a few groceries and a quicky mart for some refreshments.

Congrads.

If you are near Lexington drop by Buds new firing lane and try it out.

Want a real workout bring about 200 rounds and try their new steel pop up lane for 1/2 hour.

Kinda like whack-a-mole on steroids.

Way to go. I remember when I took my class. It was a windy day out on the range. The corner of my target pulled loose and covered the body for my last two shots. I still remember putting two in the head of the body target. LOL Good Times.

Thanks guys. Was bit of a pain getting them but now that's its over I'm glad I did. I don't see myself carrying every time I leave the house but it will be nice to have a choice.

RDMallory - Buds was one of my stops yesterday. Next time I'm up that way I may give the range a try. Sounds like fun!

I used to think like this until a couple of incidents made me realize the bad guys don't make appointments and bad things can happen anywhere. I carry everywhere it is legal to do so.
